I seem to be getting no sensible answer from Qantas.
I fly out ECONOMY 15th June BNE to HKG. (this return journey was made on one booking)
I then have a separate booking with EK but booked through Qantas as a reward flight from HKG to Manchester (Business)

From what i gather from their website they can book the luggage right through to my destination. Though the staff online seem to think not. I am hoping not to have a discussion with them on check in, as i only have 1hr 30 in HKG connection

I wanted to know if the baggage could be booked right through as business, hence me being able to retrieve it quicker at my final destination.

Does anyone know if the QF check in staff can/or would do this?
TIA.

Rebecca, welcome to AFF.

Technically they can, though in theory they aren't supposed to check through on separate bookings between some partners (QF/EK may be OK though, some other oneworld partners like AA this has been restricted). At the end of the day it will come down to the age you get at BNE. They can do it, but they may not - an dtechnically separate PNR's they have an argument to not do it.

As for getting your bag tagged as Business. Honestly I'd say unlikely ex-BNE if you are in Y. Again a nice agent MAY stick a priority tag on it (specially if you have any sort of QF status)

finally - as I am sure you know - being tagged as Bsiness may or may not actually result in speedy delivery of your bag that's fully op to the ground staff, and how the bag is put into the container, and taken off etc. In theory yes, but sometimes.. nope. So good luck either way! :)

IMO 1h30 at HKG is pushing it just a little. In theory it should be fine but if QF is delayed it could get interesting. Hopefully they will check you through, issue BP etc to make it all easy.

Hi Richard. This is taken from their website which say they can ???? My flight lands at 17:25 and Ek leaves at 19:10. Ive been to HKG before and its a bit of a nightmare.. I presume if they dont check it right through i have to collect luggage, go through customs and get to departures and check in again??

Yes Rebecca, you'd have to clear customs, then re-check your bag, which would make it VERY tight (and I am not sure EK would check you in depending on timing).

yes that table says QF-EK is OK on the same booking.

I am just a bit confused by your post above though:

fly out ECONOMY 15th June BNE to HKG. (this return journey was made on one booking)
I then have a separate booking with EK but booked through Qantas as a reward flight from HKG to Manchester (Business)

so is itone booking or two?

ie: is it one booking with an (reward?) fight BNE-HKG in Y, then HKG-MAN EK J?

or is it 2 bookings? This is the key.

Two different bookings. So two reservation numbers. The table also says YES with separate PNR. QF- EK, or am i not reading it right??
So the booking BNE to HKG is ECONOMY full cost and the HKG to man is a reward booking booked with qantas.

oh yes, I just read the bit at the top - missed the separate PNR bit. Yes, that looks like it should be OK!

I feel far more confident for you now :) Apologise for that confusion on my part! Enjoy your trip North!

Thanks Richard had a bit of a panic, then.. read a few thread, though old i must add to say that the interlining between QF and EK remains ,, ill take the screen shot with me in case i get a grump on the desk :)

Hi Rebecca, my wife and I did something similar a couple of weeks ago, flew SYD/HKG on QF Y as a paid ticket then onto EK J on a QFF award ticket (separate PNR), BUT we had a 6.5 hour layover so didn’t bother to try and get through-checking of bags or boarding passes for EK before we left SYD.
So we had to get our bags, go through immigration and then check in at EK counter, then back through immigration, security etc.
I can confirm RichardMEL’s comment that the timing you have is way too tight for it to work.
So it is essential that you get it all done in BNE before you leave. Don’t take “No” from QF staff. Best of luck!

If they won’t check it through, you will almost certainly misconnect at Honkers. Then you’d miss your onward Award J flight, which being a separate booking, would be a major consequence.

Are you able to change to an earlier flight out of Brisbane? Even previous day. That would be my focus right now.

I’ve got a very similar award flight later this year HKG to Europe. Like you, I have a positioning Flight (from Sydney in my case), but I’m flying in a day early, so there’s plenty of contingency.

looking into that but it seems there are no flights that land earlier than 1710

I think departing a day earlier or go hand luggage only are your only ‘safe’ options.

While I’d love to be wrong, I don’t think they are going to check through your bags, and you really don’t want to be arguing this with the checkin staff on the day.

Airlines have virtually eliminated interlining bags on separate tickets in the last couple of years, even within airline alliances.

I've just checked in at Sydney this morning. This was my experience:
Combination of a paid booking on Qantas, followed by an award booking on Emirates using QF points.
It ended up taking about 10-15 minutes to get checked in and bag tagged to my final destination.
Check in agent said not possible. I said yes it is.
Check in agent queried with agent one desk over, who also said no. I pulled up the QF site on my phone and asked why it says it can be done.
Check in agent goes to supervisor with my phone. Supervisor says yes, it can be done.
Got it sorted, but it took a while and the agent also had to get on the phone to get it done. She was very apologetic and said they had been told it wasn't possible.

Rightio. Not going to risk baggage! Will take hand luggage only , that way i can check in online etc and no need for bags .. I think 1 hour 45 should be ok???

My parents did almost exactly this a few weeks ago, except they had a longer connection in HKG. The general consensus was that their bags should have been able to be checked through, but they were not. The check-in agent in Brisbane refused to do it. I don't think they really pushed though as they had enough time in HKG to clear customs etc.

There is no way I would book a 1:45 connection at HKG on separate tickets. This is bound to end in tears.

Even without luggage, your inbound flight just has to be 1 hour late and you'll miss the connection (at your own expense as it's on a separate ticket).

I didn't risk it Matt just took hand luggage and checked in online, printed all boarding passes before I left. I booked a buggy too though if easily have made it without. In saying that the service appears to have a bit of a "queue" jumping agreement. Although the queues were really short. I guess the know the quietest security transfer points
