checked bags, but not for all segments

Yes - just ask for the bag to be checked to point A and wen you get there collect it from the carousel and hand over your contraband to your accomplice whilst you continue on to point B.

I want to check in a bag in the middle of the itinerary, and pull it out before the end... for example let's say I'm doing

SYD-BNE-MEL-AKL ... i only want to check it in for BNE-MEL

sounds easy enough?

SHOULD be doable..bagless from A TO B..'obtain' bag at point B.. check bag in at point B, stating to checkin person to tag ONLY to point C...collect bag at point C...'offload' bag to whoever you are giving it to...and continue bagless to point D :D IF BAGGAGE IS INCLUDED IN TICKET = NO COST...IF BAGGAGE IS EXTRA = BAGGAGE CHARGE WHEN CHECKING IN FROM B TO C..(ie..depends which carrier you're using)... hope thats a bit clear!!!

Essentially all you need to do check in again at the point you are depositing the bag to be checked. In theory... with domestic electronic bag drop could someone check your bag in for you?

But the electronic bag drop would send the bag to final destination not MEL as the point prior.

You couldn't do this at an autobag drop because you cannot ask a kiosk to 'short tag' a bag BNE/MEL as it will want to print a tag out for the entire journey ie BNE/MEL/AKL assuming those flights are in the one pnr. Just go to Premium checkin and say you want to checkin a bag but can they short-tag it to MEL & just make sure the tag says MEL on it before the CSA sends the bag off.

You may be a detective who brought a person in custody SYD/BNE in handcuffs but you are now flying BNE/MEL without the PICA so need to checkin your handcuffs as they can only go in the cabin if they're attached to a person.

Qtags don't work internationally as yet so even though you only want the bag to go on the one domestic sector BNE/MEL, you would get an error response at the bag drop (ie bag won't be sent off) as your pnr contains an international flight so your only option is a paper tag & seeing a CSA who will need to short tag the bag to MEL.

If using a self service kiosk, it will want to issue a bag tag to the final destination if both flights are on the same day on the same pnr as there is no option for you to ask the kiosk to short tag a bag to MEL. If you were overnighting in MEL however, you could use a kiosk in BNE to get a paper tag & it would only issue it to MEL as your MEL/AKL flight is the next day so as far as the system is concerned you are only travelling BNE/MEL.

Might be implied in the above answers but the most straightforward way to do it ould be to ask only for boarding pass for A to B (no checked bags).

At B, front up with bag and get boarding pass for only B to C, with checked bag.

At C check in for C to D, no checked bag.

That said, I've tried to add a bag in a segment going international several times and have been refused every time (although I didn't do the multiple boarding pass thing).

EG AC Calgary to Vancouver, 1 checked bag; I wanted to check a second bag (with winter coats and business papers) at Vancouver for the leg to Sydney. No dice.

What was AC's excuse? The fact that they wouldn't add a bag mid-journey or that you would have exceeded your bag allowance as they only allow one piece (if travelling in whY)? Wonder if they would've done if you hadn't checked a bag already in YYC.

To be honest I never challenged it :( ; it wasn't a huge deal; just meant kept carrying the extra carry-on. Was in business, so wasn't a baggage allowance issue.

At times I've also asked if, having checked 2 bags on a first segment of a domestic/international check-in, I could collect one at an intermediate stop (not a 'stopover'). Again, no.

Maybe I'm just a soft touch for the check-in agents :).
