Rookie question... Is it possible to check in a bag for only some of a segments on a trip?
Yes - just ask for the bag to be checked to point A and wen you get there collect it from the carousel and hand over your contraband to your accomplice whilst you continue on to point B.

I want to check in a bag in the middle of the itinerary, and pull it out before the end... for example let's say I'm doing
SYD-BNE-MEL-AKL ... i only want to check it in for BNE-MEL
sounds easy enough?
Essentially all you need to do check in again at the point you are depositing the bag to be checked. In theory... with domestic electronic bag drop could someone check your bag in for you?
Might be implied in the above answers but the most straightforward way to do it ould be to ask only for boarding pass for A to B (no checked bags).
At B, front up with bag and get boarding pass for only B to C, with checked bag.
At C check in for C to D, no checked bag.
That said, I've tried to add a bag in a segment going international several times and have been refused every time (although I didn't do the multiple boarding pass thing).
EG AC Calgary to Vancouver, 1 checked bag; I wanted to check a second bag (with winter coats and business papers) at Vancouver for the leg to Sydney. No dice.
What was AC's excuse? The fact that they wouldn't add a bag mid-journey or that you would have exceeded your bag allowance as they only allow one piece (if travelling in whY)? Wonder if they would've done if you hadn't checked a bag already in YYC.
