Received this message now when trying to check-in for my flight from CBR to SYD (via MEL) via the QF mobile app:

Any ideas what's going on here?

Perhaps the connection couldn't be made OR the connecting flight is expected to be delayed/cancelled. In such instances, they will ask you to talk to the check-in desk and offer a direct flight instead.

I've had this message a few times over the past 12 months or so. I haven't been able to find any pattern as to when or why it happens - apart from once on a day that QF changed/cancelled an evening MEL-SYD flight three times on me between breakfast and lunch time. I put that down to the app not being able to keep up plus losing a confirmed points upgrade in the process.

It really does come down to "You are flying Qantas. What happens from there is anyone's guess."
Lounge agents have never shed any light on it either. They just tap on their keyboard and a BP spits out without any fuss. Sucks for those without lounge access who have to join the long service desk queues downstairs with everyone else who got to the airport without checking in - either for the same issue or because they're unaware that QF is now competing head to head with Ryanair in pissing people off by deliberately having kiosks that don't have a check in option.

Not the case. Got plenty of time to make the connection: 45 minutes. Heck probably have enough time to confiscate some candy from the QF Pub while I’m at it.

That being said if I do get rebooked on a nonstop to Sydney could I still request ORC DSC for this?

Maybe this thread has some explanation.

PS Its DYKWIA 🙂

Do you have multiple flights in/out of SYD/MEL/CBR on the day? The system can have conniptions for status runners.

No just CBR > MEL > SYD

The outbound was taken at the end of prior program year and inbound will be taken at start of this new program year. This ticket has seen many rebookings due to sched changes including at one point the outbound disappearing inexplicably. Unsure if that has anything to do with it.

Yea you can. My experience is as follows ;

1. On a couple of instances where QF asked if I can make changes to my travel plan, I’ve requested to be upgraded to J and have been successful always.

2. Once the trip is completed and SC posted, I call the customer support and request for ORC. Have been successful so far in this as well.

I've had this twice now, however I was already checked in and the message showed up on the same day as the flight.

Both times, what arriving at the airport, turned out there was a rolling delay that impacted the flight I had booked. There was a message for staff to re-book me onto an earlier flight if one was available. These were non-flex fares.

Edit: Come to think of it, this message could be showing up if you tried to check in and had declared that you'd be travelling with dangerous goods.

I will show up to CBR early then (i.e. 14:30) for my 18:30 flight if that's the case, then. I'm open to earlier flight or different routings. So long as I get my 40 status credits for this inbound trip I'll be happy! Nothing like ~$150 red e-deal ticket turning into 40 SCs!

I didn't even have an opportunity to check in and make any such declarations for that matter. I literally loaded the app today when TripIt Pro reminded me it's time to check in and I immediately saw that message.

One other item to point out I'm booked to fly SYD > CHC on Sunday evening with QF. Unsure if that has anything to do with this given the trip is a couple days from tomorrow's departure but I leave that there.

Update: I arrived slightly earlier for my flight than usual (i.e. 3 hours ahead of departure time as opposed to 2 hours) and checked in at counter. I was offered to be put on the 17:55 non-stop to Sydney but sheepishly said, "nah I'll keep what I've got". Looking forward to earning 40 SCs (instead of the usual 20).

Did they offer you an upgrade to J on the 17:55 non-stop?

Sorry, an airline might not proactively offer an upgrade, so, I will rephrase - did you try asking if they can upgrade you to J on the 17:55 ?

Further to this thread, there is a “check in at the airport” message on my QF ADL-SYD flight on Monday evening. No international connection. Usually MMB says “check in opens 24 hours prior to your flight.” I don’t remember ever seeing this message on a direct domestic flight before.

Might be a chance the flight is cancelled.
OR, lucky dreams, they might want to upgrade you to dom J, (we can only dream).
Though, one thought popped into my dog head, QFd OLCI opens 24 hours prior to flight, not 48 unlike VA.
So, probably too early to do OLCI for QFd.
Heh, sorry, is this for this upcoming Mon, or Mon last week?

This is for a flight in two days.

I think I’ve had this a few times and there wasn’t anything untoward in the end after getting the BP at the airport (that I as the passenger noticed), it wasn’t because I was in the exit row. If you’ve been upgraded (extremely unlikely) you’ll still be able to check in and get a BP. And if there’s a cancellation, as mentioned you’ll see something else explicit plus an SMS.
