Hi,

I can see that Qantas have released some cheap early bird flights.
We have already booked our flight BNE-LAX one way for next August (in Business using points). I was going to pay for the return flight (Economy).

If I search for a return flight the return leg from LAX-BNE is just $592. But if I search for this as a one-way, the price goes up to $900ish. Is there any tricks to getting around this to get the cheaper flight? There are 4 of us so it adds up!

Thanks.

You can keep the return leg for your next USA trip by scheduling it out in advance, say for in 2015 ( and if the sale fare conditions allow it in the maximum stay).

otherwise i'd just buy the return and 'throw away' the return leg rather than paying more for 1-way

You are looking at the return leg of BNE-LAX return airfare and want that same price for a one-way LAX-BNE?

Not going to be easy. One-way airfares are generally expensive and in some cases I have seen them even more expensive than the return airfare.

You can cancel the 2 business class one-way awards and book these as a return award in business class for 2 people. Then purchase 2 return economy airfares that are on sale.

So in essence you will have 2 people travelling economy and 2 travelling business. And if you play your cards right you can share the spoils by having 2 people sitting in business for outbound leg and the other 2 people sitting in business for inbound leg

I thought I'd read on here somewhere that you can combine an award ticket eg BNE/LAX with a commercial ticket eg a sale fare LAX/BNE. I'd call up QF and see if they can book the $592.00 LAX/BNE fare in the same booking so they'd need to re-issue the ticket as a return BNE/LAX/BNE with the outbound flight being a Classic award & the inbound being a commercial fare.

If the above doesn't fly, another option would be to look at booking a return LAX/BNE/LAX or even LAX/BNE/HNL ticket so that the forward flight would get you home from your holiday in August and the return flight could be your positioning flight for your next holiday to the USA/Hawaii. Eg if you wanted a week in Hawaii 4 months after your other trip in December 2015, I'd play around on the QF website or other booking engine with pricing LAX/BNE in Aug/Sep then BNE/LAX or HNL in December.

Then to get back from your second trip in December you could buy a one way JQ fare HNL/BNE or if you still had points to burn then do a Classic award back as JQ have one fares that aren't conditional of being part of a return journey ie the cheapest fare HNL/BNE can be bought as one sector & doesn't require you to buy a return sector whereas QF & HA have the full service airline cost structure.

I know sometimes it's hard to deal with anything more than one trip at a time but sometimes it can be financially beneficial to have two trips on the go at once.

Not sure if you have any VA Velocity points to burn or a credit card (eg Amex) that allows you to convert credit card points into Velocity points but the one way redemption HNL/BNE or vv is 37,500 points plus approx. USD37.74 in taxes per person. You need to book this over the phone with VA but you can check for award availability on Flight Availability | Upgrades | Frequent Flyer Information for Hawaiian which is booked in the "T" class fare bucket. Ex SYD is a bit more ie 45,000 points pp plus taxes.
