I'd really like to know exactly what kind of 'free duty' the Aussie airports are providing? Duty free used to mean no tax right? Is this still the case now with GST?

These duty free prices are basically the same as my local Dan Murhpys....a real con job.

duty free,not profit free......

It's what happens when governments sell off airports, and then said airport's new owners grant a monopoly to one company to provide "duty free" liquor shops in that airport.

As an aside, every time I read this thread I still can't help but think "why on Earth is anyone buying JW Black" :)

As Serfty said we simply chose it as an easily available purchase at 99% of duty free outlets - which in turn would give an insight into the overall pricing structure of said airport/duty free outlet.

I don't mind the double black however

In terms of the benchmark, there is still a difference in price, although some may be confused by the fact the duty free is a 1L for $49.99, while the Dans $48.99 is for 700ml, the Grey Goose however does have only a $5 differential between duty free and retail, while the JW XR21 has a $50 delta, being on offer at $99 duty free vs $149 at Dans.

If you were just looking at red, the current two bottles for $49 compares very favourably with dans at $30.85, given its 1.125l vs 700ml.

Duty free with a large markup. I have seen some of the prices reduced in Australian airports but still extortionate. I would rather purchase a 1L bottle of Vodka for ~AUD15 from Thailand on arrival and bring back in my checked luggage.

Dom Perignon is $132.99 US at Costco Marina del Rey in California and I bought some on the way out to a restaurant where it was $299 US on the drinks menu.

I bought some DP 2003V in SIN last week and ended up ~150aud mark. Ok, not that chepeast, but it was the last port prior to arriving in AUS with only hand carry, so for my travel requirements, it worked for me.

Also, whilst we're talking about California I saw Grey Goose vodka 750ml for $29.99USD ...... what's the going price in Australia for this? Well over $60!!

Well just arrived back in Perth airport last week and decided to buy a 1 litre bottle of Smirnoff Red and a 1 litre of Smirnoff Blue label export strength plus a 200mL of Barcardi Rum and it came to $56... At a couple of Perth liquor stores the Smirnoff Red label was $36-40 or so, so even though a bit of a rip off compared to other duty free places around the world, still a big saving... I don't desperately watch liquor store catalogues to find when they are discouting this stuff... Probably the more high end stuff the price differential would narrow between duty free and regular liquor stores...

I think we have a new leader, $23.20 at Langkawi Fair Supermarket.
