Can you imagine Coles having two supermarkets next door to each other and charging different prices for the same brand of milk?

Crazy...

Have you checked pricing in Woolies and then gone to a Big W in the same shopping centre ;)?

Anyone had any experience with DF prices at CDG or HKG? SYD is my only other option, and I may as well just buy at Dan Murphys then...

Coming back into SYD or outbound from Oz?

If you are buying coming back into SYD from HKG, you won't be able to buy DF at HKG. This is a topic on-going at the moment, so there is info in other threads regarding this.

Retail in HKG is cheaper than DF at the airport - $110HKD for 750ml Stolichnya at ThreeSixty Supermarket for example:!:

Just remember to pack your purchases in your checked luggage to avoid the LAG inspection/confiscation at the gate

Singapore is the generally cheapest place I have seen in recent times.

That and the NZ www.dutyfreestores.co.nz pre-orders.

Even USA retail (taxed) seems generally cheaper that MEL/SYD/BNE/PER Duty Free.

A post from quite a while ago, but this still stands

Aussie Duty Free is a rip off and I laugh at those lining up to spend $$$

Smirnoff Flavoured Vodka!

I was purchasing bottles of flavoured Vodka for $9.00 Aussie in a supermarket outside of Los Angeles, Duty Free in Australia was $35 and Dan Murhphy's is $31.......

$ 13.6652 AUD

Not bad, but even cheaper in USA supermarkets, as above

Back into Syd. I recall having this problem in BKK, but thought Honk Kong might be different. Would it be ok to purchase in CDG in tamper proof bags and bringing it through HKG to SYD?

From memory, won't make *any* difference - they will confiscate in HKG upon boarding. I flew out of HKG earlier this year and was sad that I couldn't grab a great deal on JW Blue, (and didn't even bother picking up a good deal on alcohol in BKK on the way through either. . . )

No LAGs over 100ml are permitted on flights from HKG to AU.
They check just prior to boarding.

At Hong Kong airport this week, 1L of JW Black was selling for HKD270 and at Singapore airport for SGD44.10. That's AUD35.08 and AUD34.66 at current rates.

I also posted in another duty free thread:

At Singapore airport today, I purchased 1L of Bacardi Mojito for SGD22.30 and 1L of Canadian Club whisky for SGD21.10. At market rates right now, that's a piddly AUD17.53 and AUD16.58. Soon, it may be cheaper to buy alcohol at overseas duty free outlets than it is to buy a bottle of water at an Australian airport.

At OR Tambo JNB this week 1 L JW Black and 1L Chivas 12 YO both ZAR 299 = AUD $36

At Singapore and Bangkok this week, 1L of JW Black was selling for SGD44.70 (~ AUD34.65) and THB1150 (~ AUD37).

Today at Yangon International Airport, JW Black was selling for USD30 and USD59 for 1 and 2L.

Also, JW Red for USD16, JW Green for USD42 and JW Gold for USD60 (all 1L).

In the past five days, 1L of Johnnie Walker Black was selling for USD36.93 at DXB, THB1100 (~$35.10) in BKK and HKD290 (~$35.50).

In Australia? An extortionate $49.99.

Speaking of extortion, my ill-informed Father purchased a 1L bottle of Grey Goose vodka for USD33 in an Asia port last week but had it confiscated in transit in Singapore. The same bottle was selling at duty free in Perth for $69, more than double!

I'd really like to know exactly what kind of 'free duty' the Aussie airports are providing? Duty free used to mean no tax right? Is this still the case now with GST?

These duty free prices are basically the same as my local Dan Murhpys....a real con job.
