Yesterday I received an email from qantas advising that they had changed the special meals

"These options have been simplified to
provide a range of 13 individual Special Meals which cater
for religious, medical, or dietary requirements, along with
meals for children. "

Basically the options now are diabetic, gluten intolerant, and a whole heap of variations on vegetarian and vegan. The low fat meal (and I don't know how many others) have been done away with.

The call centre said they were only catering special meals for medical, religious, and children now. I don't know who they are taking their advice from, but there are lots of conditions that can require a low-fat meal ( I know because I have one). The website talks of 'new cuisine' that is healthier and then talks about munching on cupcakes - which doesn't seem very healthy to me.

Does anyone else have a problem getting their required special meal now?

Answer

From my experiences of SPML's, Domestically the LFML has been the same as the DBML for a long time.

I no longer get them.

I order a VGML and wasn't informed via email of changes so I assume vegetarian is still on the menu thankfully.

I had low fat selected but I'm now undecided which way to go. I think I'll punt on the standard meal for the moment but unfortunately forgoing the advantage of being served first :(

I HATE being served first cause they serve the meal but often not the drink so then you're stuck waiting for that. I'd rather be served with everyone else, get a drink with my meal and have the meal sitting on my table for less time. Can't have it all though. I'm just glad vegetarian meals are an option, even if they are often bad

My LFMLs always have either a bottle of water or juice on the tray but yes if I want wine I have to wait for that.

I have not been notified of any changes to LFML availability. Guess I will find out on my next meal-time flight.

Anna, the website that the email linked to said this about existing bookings

"For existing bookings (made before 11 August 2009) for travel before 31 December 2009, your existing Special Meal preference may still be available if no changes are made to your booking after 11 August 2009 and prior to your travel."
