Changes to how you use your $450 Travel Credit

IT sucks but it is what it is. These businesses aren't charities. I think it would be "fair play" to remind us it's coming up - I've forfeited quite a few Accor "free" nights and they refused to reinstate even the ones through the pandemic. Small mindedness as I refuse to stay at Accor hotels regardless of the status AMEX includes with my card product.

AMEX, I won't boycott because I rely on it for all my payments and they know it.

I've had two extended and one reinstated during the pandemic so I have not missed any free stays to date as a result, so they can be flexible if they want to be...

Can you no longer book fine hotels/ resorts with the platinum reserve travel credit?

Don't see the option when making the booking anymore. Can only see the option on hotels without the FHR benefits.

That appears to be the case (from the online system anyway, whether they are flexible over the phone don't know).

It seems the primary platinum card has the $450 travel credit and FHR sttached to it as well as points balance; Platinum reserve cc has the $400 travel credit applied to it plus points balance but no FHR; and for reference my AC platinum card has FHR applied to it, but nothing else. A bit bureaucratic IMHO, but it is what it is.

Has anyone had experience cancelling a reservation with the new credit? I booked a flex Econ fare with the travel credit last membership year (only a bit over a month ago) but I need to cancel my booking and rebook as Amex travel are being extremely unhelpful and said I can't change a flexible economy fare because the new price is lower, that discussion is for another thread.

If I cancel the booking for a refund, I already received the travel credit to my amex. Is the system smart enough to take the $450 off me or because I had it credited it will stay? I know when I rebook I won't receive the credit again, that is ok if they don't take it off me.

keen to also hear any experiences with this since the system change. need to cancel a flight, will lose the $150 QF cancellation but hopeful of keeping the remainder and not having it clawed back by AMEX.

T&Cs say "you will forfeit your annual Travel Credit benefit and American Express may reverse the statement credits issued in the relevant anniversary year."

but keen to hear any real world experiences...

very keen to understand this as well. I suspect they will - I remember a while back when they issued a $300 credit for dining. When the restaurant charged me the amount as part of the booking (Amex system credited me the $300) but I had to cancel the booking so reversed everything, i.e., restaurant refunded me, then Amex debited the $300. Thus I would say they can definitely do it, i'm just not sure if they HAVE To do it.

i ended up cancelling the flight and getting refunded from QF via AMEX Travel (less the QF cancellation). that was back in August, and (as yet) they haven't clawed it back...

As usual, I've had some <$200 fares/hotels that I could have used the $200 credit on, but that's impossible now. The first >$200 fare I've looked at since my latest anniversary is on BA next year. On BA's site, it's $230. On Amex travel, it's $570 for the same flights.

So, I could spend $340 extra in order to use a $200 credit. So useful.

In my experience you would forfeit any Amex credit used in case of cancellations. I am not really sure if its the golden rule but have experienced and lost my Amex credit last year.

I've been trying to login and book for the last few hours and can't seem to login. Any one else experiencing this or know a work around?

It's an intermittent issue with the travel site. I was able to login and look for options when trying to book on Amex travel site this morning.

I managed to find a hotel that was only $2/night more on Amex than other sources. I booked just before my statement date and the $200 credit posted on that statement, but the charge is on the next one, which is nice.

Less nice is the confirmation screen that doesn't even list the fact that I chose the breakfast inclusive price. For that matter, it doesn't list anything useful beyond the hotel name and dates. No price. No receipt. It's closer to a child's school project than a professional web site. (There is a proper receipt when you first book, but none of that data seems to be available if you go back to manage/view the booking later.)

Looks like the Amex prices for flights are way out whack with what QF are charging again.

I'm planning a trip to Singapore later this year, and was planning to use the $450 travel credit for one of the flights.

One option I was looking at (ADL-SYD-SIN, with the SYD-SIN leg on QF1), is currently $550.00 on the Qantas app. Amex are quoting over $750 for the same flights.

Think I may just get some rewards seats on other flights and save the credit for a something where the price difference isn't so obscene.

I don't think they sell the sale fares, and charge around a $30 premium over red e deal fares
