I recently flew a number of paid short sectors on *A airlines (LH, LX) within Europe and put my LM number on the bookings - not that I expected many points but wanted to reset the expiry date. Now I find out that LM does not award any points for such Y flights - of course I should have checked "wheretocredit.com" beforehand but in looking into it LM seems to be almost the only *A which "credits" 0% miles for these discounted fares - others give at least 25% which of course will reset expiry date.

All my own error but with LM expiry rules one has to really be on the ball - at least you can now see your expiry date online in your account profile. I have started using the LM hotel booking portal (where is makes sense for non-major chain hotels) - these offer 1000's of miles and of course reset expiry. In fact I now somewhat belatedly realise these are the 'cheapest' LM points going. However for major chains I still prefer to use the hotel's own web site as these usually offer better pricing (often 5% less than booking sites) and you get member benefit (free breakfast if you're Gold).

I use Award Wallet to help me manage expiry of my points from most airlines, hotels, etc. It is also very good at advising changes to itineraries; such as when a flight is delayed.

I've been notified of delays far quicker by Award Wallet than via the operating airline.

I've looked at AwardWallet but am worried about the security of the information you need to provide (with so many FF account being hacked these days) - I use TripIt Pro to manage itineraries and like you I also been advised of itinerary changes (including gate changes) before operating airline even before notice board in the airport,
