My wife and I are flying Hong Kong LAX return and we are trying to decide if we opt for two middle seats together or window seats one behind the other .The middle seats don't appear to be conducive to having a chat with your flying buddy so would I be interested in anyone's comments on this. We will be flying over night on both sectors so the view is not really a priority

go for the middle pair - the controls can be used to slide the seat forward (when fully upright) for a chat

I'd certainly take the middle pair. While there are some barriers, it's much easier to communicate and pass books/drinks/pillows etc to one another as opposed to two window seats. Easier for you and less disruptive to other passengers as well!

very good point , or maybe I don't want to talk to her , the window seats are very appealing !

+1
we've done CX J a couple of times in the last 2 years, last trip only last month
i'd definitely go for middle pair if you want to do any talking at all

as seatbackforward wrote, the seats across the aisle are offset which make talking across the aisle very difficult - we tried that once and did not enjoy that at all.

Have to admit that my wife and I are flying Perth - Toronto in the CX J window seats. - married 40 years. First time "paying" for a J seat - used QF points a few times for upgrades before the "enhancements". So felt like getting the full "roomy" experience.

We very quickly chose the window seats as we will be travelling Canada together for 5 weeks with plenty of time to talk to each other & they are window seats, even if on an angle. Admittedly, a couple of our flights will be daylight ones.

Last time, to and from Europe, in Y, also chose window & aisle with a seat between for extra elbow room on one side. We make a point of not annoying the person in-between, and also get the occasional empty middle seat by this option.

thanks for that OZDUCK, my initial feeling was to go window as , like you, we are flying Perth HK LA then on to Vancouver , Alaska ,USA for 6 weeks so we will have plenty of time to talk also, I think I will have a chat to my wife (of 38 years) tonight and let her decide !

I'm taking my mum on CX for her first J flights later in the year and faced the same decision. Ultimately I've chosen the middle pairs for our flights over, when the experience will be all very new for her and she'll enjoy having me in talking distance, and window seats for the flights back, when we'll likely be thoroughly over each other's company after our time abroad ;)

I'd recommend two window seats, one behind the other. Being stuck in the middle of the plane ain't that much fun. For the limited time you might want to chat, you lose the ability to look out the window and control the window shades. Whether you want to watch a movie, or have a snooze, not much fun if the window seat has the blinds open and lots of glare.

There's more sense of personal space having your own little nook by the window.

We went middle seats and row 11-12 on the 777 as it is a small cabin and quiet (unless you get a kid). Talking across the centre console is no real drama for general talk but you do have to raise your voice a bit if you are deaf. I think the shell design of the seats would be worse if you were in line on the window seats. I've posted a picture of the seats somewhere here if you search

The irritating thing with CX J middle seats is that there may only be one meal service trolley that travels down the left side of the cabin first serving the A & D seats and then up the right side of the cabin serving G & K seats so you don't end up eating at the same time as your travelling partner. And if one of you has CX status you will frequently be served first (out of sequence) leaving your non status travelling companion to wait for their meal service! A quirk of CX J service that I find completely frustrating!

Check with my wife when we booked our flights. Our flights from HKG - SYD on CX (and HEL - HKG on new AY A350) will be window seats for both as she prefers the window seat.

Middle seats are good, enough so you can have a chat and enough to give you privacy

My husband and I are flying CX J from HKG to PER in March. We have chosen two window seats. I like a window and so does he, but won't forgo an aisle seat. This way we are both happy. I like shades up during the day as I get a bit claustrophobic with shades down during daylight hours.

Concur! This has happend to Mrs Subharpoon & me.

Could I ask please apart from your seat choice what other J goodies to expect? Could you book the cook or anything? I have heard there's no pajamas. I'm going SYD - HKG - EWR.

Absolutely nothing!

You get an amenity kit, but that's where it stops. No book the cook. CX is a good product in terms of a bed and IFE. The rest is 'solid' without being remarkable.
