From the Virgin Blue Newsroom (http://www.virginblue.com.au/about_us/news/index.php?co=vb&artdate=032006#news080306)

Virgin Blue today announced the airline’s Perth flights would be its first in Australia to offer Oscar winning movie entertainment via personal ‘video on demand’ players from next month.
Virgin Blue’s international subsidiary Pacific Blue was the first airline in the Southern Hemisphere to introduce the "DigEplayer" personal video units on international flights last year.
The players have been so popular, on some routes the airline has had to double the number of units available on board to keep up with demand.
Personal video on demand will be available on all Perth flights on a pay-for-use basis of $15 for the duration of flight and unlimited access to 10 preloaded feature length movies, 10 sitcoms and short programs, up to 20 music videos and around 100 songs across several music categories.
"Guests on our short haul international flights liked the DigEplayers so much, we asked regular flyers on Perth flights if they’d like them too," said Heather Jeffery, spokesperson for Virgin Blue.
"They’re perfect for longer domestic routes, larger than a paperback, smaller than a laptop, a mini computer with a hard drive loaded with hundreds of hours of entertainment.
"Each Guest controls and determines what they watch, and when, including pause, rewind and fast forward options at the tip of their fingers. In six months of offering video on demand on international flights, the only complaints we have ever received are that the flight time is too short to get through all the movies," she said.
The initiative follows other Virgin Blue customer service and product developments including Blue-Check self check-in kiosks at all major airports, ‘Velocity" Loyalty Program in conjunction with Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and National Australia Bank and a progressive new ‘Web-Check-In’ service that lets travellers check-in for their flight via their PC from home, laptop, or office.

Sounds like a great idea. On-demand systems are so much better too.

But what happens when someone reclines?

I'd forgotten all about the Foxtel thing (although they seem to have dropped 10000 feet in altitude - Foxtel was for 40,000 feet, the latest gadget for 30,000 feet).

I am surprised they even had to ask the people that flew to Perth if they thought it was a good idea.

Jetstar scuffles with Virgin Blue over inflight entertainment
Thursday, March 09, 2006

Jetstar has drawn attention to the accuracy of Virgin Blue’s announcement yesterday of being the first to offer domestic passengers inflight rental of personal video on demand players on Perth services, and instead claims it was the first carrier to offer the service on its selected Australian domestic routes since June 2005.

Jetstar said the carrier has also offered the service on its trans Tasman flights since December 2005.

“On 30 March last year Jetstar issued a statement announcing it would introduce video on demand by June 2005”

“We subsequently did so and as we have progressively grown our Airbus A320 fleet, all aircraft have been equipped to offer video on demand for mid range and longer domestic services and trans Tasman services.

Jetstar said all their A320 services on flights of at least 1 hour 30 minutes provide our customers with the choice to “watch what they want, when they want” through video on demand.

The low cost carrier said from March 28 when it enters the Perth market it will continue to offer the choice of inflight video on demand.

Jetstar’s video on demand entertainment units feature popular and latest release movies, TV shows, video and audio tracks and can be rented on their direct Perth flights for $10 from 28 March 2006.

Umm... Just looks like JQ trying to spoiler a perfectly valid statement/advert

If the release states as quoted, "Virgin Blue today announced the airline’s Perth flights would be its first in Australia to offer Oscar winning movie entertainment via personal ‘video on demand’ players from next month. "

I see nothing at all misleading; they are not trying to claim to be the 1st carrier, just that it is *their* first flights to offer it
