Cask Wine

Just had a (terrible) thought.

With all the emphasis on weight saving on a/c, why arent airlines ditching the bottles of wine for casks, especially in Economy?

Imagine a long haul to LAX or LHR carrying casks would surely save weight compared to multiple bottles? Prob not sufficient weight saving to make it worthwhile to apply to Cityflyer / Domestic services.

Assuming your question is why they don't?

Time.
Far quicker to hand over a bottle than get out a glass and pour it.
With the plastic bottles in Economy wouldn't be that much more weight.

I guess that's what struck me - why hadnt they done this - they're thinning out spoons, halving in flight mags etc to save weight, and heavy glass bottles are far less efficient than casks (for same volume).

The bottles are plastic in Y

I think they should rig up some sort of clothes line arrangement to peg multiple bladders onto that can then be moved around the cabin for self service access by pax. This would also save money because playing the Goon of Fortune would remove the need for IFE.

If being served from large bottle then Glass; hoever many internations (short?) segments such as T-T have the small bottles and they are gnerally plastic (not the bubbles however).

I have never had a problem with the vino on offer in Y (when not drinking beer!), I thought that the choice QF had mad was prety good. QF Link serves from the bottle however into a rough rim plastic cup...:shock:
