The rules on carry-on are clearly stated by the airlines but certainly in Aus, not enforced. As I've recently picked up a regular cross country job I thought I would try the carry-on only thing. So I bought a cabin sized roll on and also carried a backpack with the laptop and iPad. I measured and weighed them both and they were within the size limits and both weighted just under 7kg. On arrival at the airport, I just couldn't bring myself to carry both these bags onto the plane, for me, it just didn't seem "right" so I checked in the roll on. When I boarded the plane, I struggled to find enough room for my backpack so I really don't know where I would have put the other bag. On arrival, I waited maybe 15 minutes to collect my bag.

Many of you do carry on only and many of those are clearly oversize (from observation), so what's the feeling on this issue ?

Try waiting 30 minutes at Karratha or sometimes more at Perth! Mel & Syd I have found to be pretty good but for me if I'm heading back to site and I need something with me I usually just post it to myself before I leave home.

Much easier than checked in luggage!

I endeavour to always travel HLO (hand luggage only) unless I really need to carry liquids over 100ml. My bag is within size limits and weighs about 1.2 kg. I can quite happily travel for 3-4 weeks with it, and I have never been challenged when boarding. I take one other bag that is big enough to take a book and iPad, but is not excessive. My packing is very judicious (I have been known to take one pair of jeans over another for the sake of 100gm).

Unless you need to travel with suits or what have you that need a larger case... carry on! If you are within the rules then even if you are challenged you can justify your luggage. You just need to board early to get that overhead and under seat space.

FWIW my MEL international plane to kerb record is 4 minutes. That for me is the best justification.

All I'll say is don't be one of those morons that takes over sized cabin bags on the plane. As much as it is possible to get away with, you'll look like a fool.

Yes, this is one of my pet hates.

Unfortunately, I'd say you've got too much luggage for HLO. Roll ons weight too much (no wheels!) and I would only recommend a small backpack. This is the bag I take: Red Oxx Air Boss Carry-on Bag Designed for 1 Bag Business Travelers. plus a small satchel bag for the laptop, newspaper and some work papers.

A good website of travelling light is Leisure / Business Travel Packing List - Travel Light (One Bag)!

I'm sure plenty of others will have tips here. If travelling a lot there are significant time savings to be had.

Carry on only is easy enough to do if you're only travelling for a week or two in a similar climate.

If you're going from one climate to another then you'll most probably need check in.

I am with JessicaTam and Medhead. I have recently done 2 overseas trips of 7-10 days each with a similar carry on, Tom Bihn's Tri-Star, and I absolutely love it. With 7 - 8 flights in as many days, not having to wait for a bag/suitcase is heaven. Not to mention coming home to Adelaide, where not having a bag checked-in means the difference between being out of the airport in 10 minutes or over an hour.

My bag fits the 105 cms Virgin cabin guidelines, although I don't always manage to stay under the 7 kgs (incl laptop), but have not been challenged as the bag does not look heavy or full. Clothes are packed in a packing case which doubles as a day pack at destination.

Here is a picture of my carry on. That's an 11" MacBook air. (edit main bag varies between 6.5 and 7.5 kgs on average)

Yes, very true.

Rules differ markedly in respect to domestic!

With Qantas jet services one is normally permitted up to two "105cm bags" being no more than 7kg each.

Virgin Australia allow one 105cm bag up to 7kg and a personal item, such as a laptop bag.

Jetstar allow 1 x 10kg

My personal preference is Carry On At Your Convenience. It is a later effort but I do like the double entendres. I also like Cleopatra and Up The the Khyber has the wonderful infamy line.

.....oh dear I think I may have missed the point again.......but occasional flyers will never understand carry on.

I prefer hand luggage only where possible, and I can usually make it comply with the limits (esp. domestic), though the weight is definitely thereabouts at times (OK, sometimes probably a smidgin' over, but not much). But I don't have any particular issue with checking bags either. If I think I may be pushing the envelope with HLO then happy to check a bag as well.

Im in love with that bag!

I prefer carryon for domestic, but a lot of times recently I've had stuff I'd need to check in (ie metal studded rugby boots you just can't get past security).

Im having this major debate with myself at the moment for an upcoming BNE trip to palm my boots of to a teammate to take up and travel with carryon. Of course the bigger benefit for me is I'm trying to aim for an earlier flight as well to what I booked (whether through being offered at check in or through sweet talking a staffer up), but if it is the latter, I'd definitely need to do hang luggage only.

I'm HLO where possible as well... I have a pretty light roll-aboard which also has straps so it be used as a backpack if needs be as well.

I've done upto a week with it.

I remember the first time I did an OS HLO trip mrs harvyk was very confused that I didn't want to take a large bag as checked bags. I explained to her that 10 minutes from plane to curb was really nice, she soon saw my point... :)

The trick with doing HLO is to ensure you only take things you really need and will use.
It was not uncommon for me to only use 50% of what I took with me when doing checked bags.

I am always carry on only when travelling domestic or for short Asia trips. I have only used my RFID bag tags twice since I have received them.

The negative of carry on is I feel I need to get onto the aircraft early to find a good space near my seat.

HLO for me too for any trips up to 2 weeks (except maybe Scandinavia in winter): [h=1]CARIBEE SKYMASTER 40 Luggage Cabin Carry On Travel Bag[/h]
Can be purchased on the major auction site for $90 no postage fee. If I have to walk say 2 blocks to the htl, it can go on the back. It says 2kg, but I made it lighter by taking off a couple of straps.

Couldn't agree more; the only time I take on more than 1 piece is if I travel J at which point I reckon it's ok to take 2 pieces. The think that really gives me the irrits is other pax who bring on so much and then think nothing of using the space above their seat and then the space above others' seats. I think this is very selfish and thoughtless indeed.

Just realised my werks 4 ultra light is actually 2-3 cm larger than the max size for domestic carry on if I take 2 pieces. But I pretty much only travel int so it's not an issue.

"actually 2-3 cm larger than the max size for domestic carry"

If it were to be an issue, such as potentially getting stuck in the size tester, a strap to suck it in works well.
