Carry on Luggage

I have a tumi messenger bag but my new laptop is a 17" widescreen and I have no hope of getting it in,but I love this bag... it is just the best for a day trip.

I also have a Tumi ballistic nylon rolling briefcase. It cost me about $600 brand new on Ebay from the USA and can carry my laptop, wash bag, pair of pants, shirt etc and a few files. It has proved to be the best travel bag yet. I can live out of this bag for several days if need be. It also fits in most overhead lockers easily & passes thru the standard cabin baggage test in Australia.
If I have a few days away, then I have a Samsonite 22" rollaboard in which I can pack everything else I need for 3-4 days away.
I can usually get away with taking both of these on board and in fact have not had to check baggage in for some time on Domestic trips.

My wife and I have a multitude of bags from the tiny to massive.

We are thinking of getting rid of some but we find we cannot let go due to the fact that we will use most of these bags in any given year.

I know that Briggs & Riley make good bags, but Tumi seems to have the best reputation.

I have had so many samsonites end up completely b*ggered after a small number of trips that I will not buy any more.
Pay more now.. get a longer life...

Give Ebay a look.. specially on the US site. plenty there.

Cheers

How very metro.

Never been into the poseur luggage - give me something as durable and nondescript as possible.

If I was going poseur I would go for the Ducati range that was in store today ;)

I guess boot laces are unnecessary in my line of work :)

I saw the Ducati range at the Tumi store in the Beverly Center in LAX.
Great range of luggage, but I just knew that it was going to go "missing" or have a check by the TSA....

At least the standard black nylon Tumi bags dont stand out too much.

For the real posuers.. look no further than any airport baggage claim in Asia... Way too much Louis V and Prada etc etc to be real.
Especially on a flight coming in from PVG etc....

I have a fantastic Targus backpack that serves almost all my carry-on needs. Multiple zippered compartments with a padded laptop section. Right now it holds (aside from the laptop in use, obviously....).

- Laptop (15.4")
- Power Pack
- Mouse
- Various cables (network, VGA, S-Video, etc)
- Portable hard drive for all my winUAE stuff
- Several CDs and a couple of thumb drives
- Writing Folder
- A couple of manilla folders with hard copies of minutes, reports, etc
- Current Novel & magazines sufficient for the flight
- Emergency prepaid mobile
- Mobile charger
- Noise-cancelling headphones & spare battery
- Surefire Flashlight
- Travel wallet - passport, FF & Hotel cards, boarding passes, etc
- Ipaq & USB cable
- Camera & USB cable
- Pens, pencils, calculator, business cards, etc
- Spare boot laces
- Hat
- Spare sunglasses
- 1L Water Bottle in outside pocket
- Emergency socks, underwear & shirt
- Various snacks

And other items as required.

For a long-haul international J, I also take a small Samsonite rollaboard with overnight gear, etc.

Typically I check as much through as possible, and have 3 sizes of Samsonite wheeled suitcase + a suit pack to cover all possible trip durations.

Don't forget the free double hernia you get with this lot.

Good for the abs.

Plus, if you stand straight with it over one shoulder the checkin staff never think to ask to weigh it.

Although it would be lucky to top 10kg most of the time....

You never want one to snap just prior to a meeting - I wear docs (polished, of course) with everything from Jeans to Black Tie.

I always (95%) fly in Deck shoes - comfortable and light - easy to slip on and off and useful to have during business casual days in offices I travel to ;)

The docs are handy because they don't set off metal detectors, and will protect your foot when you lodge it in Mr "fly once a year" expert who is busy telling the security droid all about blah blah blah blah....

Just wondering if anyone is passing through HKG any time soon and can check the price of the Tumi 20in rollaboard at the airport for me?

Cheers

I'll be through HKG on 18th June and again 20th June. PM me close to the time to remind me.

Thanks - that would be perfect timing - if its not that much cheaper and I really want it - it still gives me time to buy it in Sydney before the end of the tax year ;)

I will be through HKG on thursday, will try and remember to check.

If Evan forgets, PM me on Fri/Sat and will check the stores in HKG. IME store prices are not that different from airport and sometimes better than airport esp. when sales are on!! Otherwise will also check airport price for you when going through on June 15th.

Thanks all - I still have not committed to the bag yet - but am sorely tempted. If I decide to get it in HKG it will be amusing to take my extras (clothes changes) in a plastic bag and then change to a much more expensive item in HKG :D

Your not wrong about being much more expensive ! i got a price from the shop near the pier for you and PM'ed it.
Price to much for me to justify, but then again i don't travel as much as some.

Thanks for the info and popping by there :)

Need to work out if I can duck into "town" to get one perhaps - I think I have a 8 hours which should be just enough to get in and out of HKG...

Hmm - should that be out and in perhaps...

And yes serfty - I will use the MTR this time ;)
