Interesting piece in Boeing's AERO magazine.

Specifically, the capacity differences with the new design bins.

typical bag count based on a standard-size carry-on bag, 9x14x22 inches (23x36x56 centimeters).
bigbin™ is 2 inches deeper than a standard bin and allows luggage to be stored inboard to outboard, nearly doubling
carry-on bag capacity

Also shows roughly how many wheel-aboards will fit vs seat count...

docjames, if I read this correctly, does it not confirm that there is insufficient overhead bin space for every passenger (if the plane is full) to have a carry-on item of the maximum size specified stored above themselves?

In practice, some like me will store a backpack under the seat in front, but I had always assumed that there was sufficient space 'above' for a carry-on of the maximum size. Clearly I was sadly misinformed!

Correct, although in practice this has been apparent for some time.

Interesting to see some sort of quantification of the space however.

Aero is usually quite a good read, comes out quarterly.

I flew on a United 739 on Saturday LAX-SFO. In their config, it was pretty basic, but I'm glad the bins were big with all the rollaboards that came on.
I can't believe the quantity and size of the carry on over here!!!
