Indeed. Already going to be pretty painful as they ramp up security checks in the UK/US around this time.

So what is airport security for (especially in the US) if they are going to ban carry on?

It's all about perception.

Security checks have been ramped up In the UK. If you have electronic devices, your tray or bag may be randomly sent for a secondary where they perform additional checks of the electronics.
