I'll be heading to the USA for a hobby show in May and want to use AA whilst I'm over there however I've noticed that some of my routes only use the American Eagle CRJ-700 and the ERJ family. According to the AA website carry on baggage on these aircraft are limited to smaller briefcase and purse size pieces. I'm a bit concerned about this as I wanted to take some fairly fragile figures for the show that I don't think would do too well in the hold. Does anybody have experience with taking carry-on on board these aircraft?

Scott.

Check-in staff placed my standard international sized carry-on in the hold - it was tagged/removed (at the gate) before departure and returned (on the air bridge) after arrival - had to wait while ground handlers retrieved it from the hold - checked baggage then had to be collected on the usual carasel.

If you have flown on a QF Link dash 8, then its basically the same procedure that AA Eagle uses.

(As per AV8 - small personal item allowed in the cabin, larger cabin bag taken as you board and returned as you disembark, or "deplane" as the yanks are fond of saying.)

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately I haven't flown in anything smaller than a 737 before (with the exception of an ATR in Cambodia, had no issue with carry on but that was a few years ago). I was thinking of contacting AA and asking them but I can't seem to find a suitable email for them on their site. Any body know what the best contact will be?

Scott.

Typically, even your standard business type bags like this one below won't fit in the overhead lockers of these planes.
I suggest you pack the fragile items extremely carefully and put them inside rigid plastic containers, then into a bag as they will likely end up in the hold at some point...

Upon boarding you will be given a tag for your carry on bag and you put it on then leave it at the end of the air bridge.

It will be stored in the baggage compartment.

On arrival you wait for your bag to be delivered at the end of the air bridge.

How big are the pieces you are taking for the show? If small enough, you could just take them in a small bag. You are allowed carry-on, it just has to be smaller than what we would regard as 'normal'.

They're approximately 30-40cms in length, fine for your usual carry-on luggage but definitely larger than the small briefcase size AA post on their website. Guess they'll have to go into the hold with lots of padding then!

Be careful with how you pack them. I had 4 flights with American Eagle last week and didn't know about the bag size on these flights and the result of my Hand luggage being put in the hold is my brand new laptop is smashed. AA don't want to know about it - keep telling me I shouldn't have out the laptop in my checked luggage - they don't seem to get that I didn't "check" it but it was taken off me.

Interesting on my last flight the pilot told me my carry on (antler wheelie bag) would fit in the overhead bins and it did - wish that was the case at the start.

The wait for your bag after these flights can also take a long time - so be prepared and pack well.
