Hi folks,

I'm trying to figure out how to carry various bits and pieces on an upcoming holiday, and the many permutations of luggage rules are starting to hurt my head.

Basically, the problem is this - I have two camera bags I'd like to carry on (both well within any size limits I've ever seen - I'm choosing not to think about the weight right now), as well as a small backpack with a change of clothes, laptop, book, etc. The camera bags can be attached to each other and *might* still make the size limits, if that'll be helpful at all.

I'm on a J one world award, so I'm thinking I should be OK for the QF flights, but I also have BA J flights and a few AA domestic Y flights... From what I can tell, the rules say I might be in trouble with those. Any thoughts on what I might be able to get away with as a QF SG, with all flights on an international itinerary?

If I absolutely have to, I can put one camera bag into a suitcase, but it's reasonably nice kit, so would prefer not to!

Cheers,

Danny

For any flights to/from/within the USA carry on is limited by Regulation to one "piece" (e.g. Rollaboard) and a "personal item" (e.g. Laptop Bag or Purse).

Other than that (in Business class):
  • QF allows, say, 2 x 115cm (45in) bags up to 7kg each.
  • BA allows one piece 126cm 50in) and a personal item (You must be able to lift the bag into the overhead locker unaided).
  • AA allows one piece 114cm (45in) and a personal item.

Thanks Serfty, I hadn't spotted that. Guess I'll see if I can figure out a way to fit a camera bag inside my backpack... Might just have to buy a cheap little netbook instead of bringing my normal laptop :(.

Danny, if you aren't eligible for Priority AAccess (Introducing PriorityAAccess(SM) Privileges) on your AA Y flights, then you might want to consider purchasing Your Choice - Group 1 Boarding (Your Choice (SM) | Flexibility, Convenience & Value By American | AA.com)...

Reason -finding space near you in the O/H lockers may be hard, BUT, on AA jet services, they will count the number of carry-on bags (i.e. not the personal items) being taken onboard. Once a predetermined limit is met, all remaining passengers will have to check their carry-on bags, or they will not be permitted to board.

Also be aware that if your AA Y flights are operated by American Eagle/Connection you may not be able to take a large carry-on bag into the cabin with you. In these circumstances the bag will be taken from you just prior to stepping onboard the aircraft and returned immediately after you disembark, and while they may not be as gentle with your belongings as you would, the process is gentler than checking it in, as it is hand carried in both directions from & to you.

Yep, I'm SG so should be all set in that respect (it's also let me pick up preferred seats, so yay for status). Just need to get into the US get-on-board-with-my-kitchen-sink-ASAP mindset!
