Cancelling award flight

So change and cancel and rebook would be 2000 points difference in fees right?
If you are looking for an answer, how many PAX are in the original booking and no you are up for at least 5000 points for a single PAX change. Canceling = 6000 points, changing = 5000 points.

As much as I would love to slog out 37 rounds with the usual suspects on this question, the only right answer is whatever the QF call centre person you speak to let's you get away with. And if they say cancel, hang up and call again. Rinse and repeat.
Give it a try and let us know how you go.

Is it 6,000 award points on cancellation per booking or per person?

Yes! Finally got all my bookings sorted out for our Europe trip in Oct 2020.

4/10/2020 BNE to DBX on EK435 Z
5/10/2020 DBX to FRA on EK45 Z
26/10/2020 MUC to DOH on QR60 U
26/10/2020 DOH to SIN on QR942 U
27/10/2020 SIN to MEL on QF36 U
28/10/2020 MEL to BNE on QF604 U

One final question, on the QF flight ticket emailed to mit states that we will be in Business however for the EK and QR flights email tickets there’s no mention of what class we are in... is that supposed to be like that?

many thanks for all those who helped me out!

BTW when I rang, I had to cancel my original CX flight to FRA thus 12,000 point in fees

You should be able to go into manage booking on both the EK and QR sits and select seats. That will confirm your ticketed cabin.

Worthwhile checking because errors have been know to be made.

If the above itinerary isn't already ticketed, keep a very close eye on it. QR has been known to cancel awards 'on hold' (but not yet ticketed) within 24 hours. And once those seats are gone you may never get them back.

@Neuro further to what @MEL_Traveller suggested seat selection on the EK flight may be via the EK site and the QF site should provide a link or the EK PNR, that will be the easy one. Also as @MEL_Traveller suggests keep a very close eye on the QR flights, I have lost QR rewards in the past due to ticketing delays, they were reinstated however I suspect my QF status and SST intervention had a lot to do with that.

Ticketing delays means that no e-ticket sent to me straight after booking the flights?

I have received e-ticket with but there appears to be no ticket number on my QR flight yet, whilst my EK and QF all have ticket number... is that what I need to watch out for? what actions should I take?

In regards to seats are they open for seat selection so far ahead?

Thanks again guys

If there's a ticket number to should apply to all carriers. you should however confirm this by either (a) going to the QR website, manage booking, and confirming the ticket number os in there, or (b) calling QR (any office will do) and asking specifically 'do you have a ticket number against this booking?.

it can happen that a ticketing carrier (in this case QF) doesn't push the ticket number across. Without the ticket number the operating airline (in this case QR) can cancel.

Not meaning to rehash but I agree with @esseeeayeenn. A couple of weeks back I posted I have changed flights and carriers without needing to cancel the original booking, below are images of the ticket for MrsM and Miss M, the original booking was JL booking MEL-ORD this was rebooked with CX ADL-YYZ, the total points remained the same, no change fees just an additional AUD33 per person in taxes. The QF agent wanted to cancel the original booking and slug me cancellation fees and then rebook on QF OW milage rewards totalling being north of 600K QF points. That was going to happen.

Matt_01 - your experience mirrors mine. I have never had a 'change' processed as anything other than a change, even with sectors, class and airlines being different.

I think some agents are getting lazy.

Probaly easier for them to cancel rather than change.

Just had the experience of having to cancel a business reward flight to Hong Kong
One with Qantas the other way with virgin.
Virgin's was seemless with points refunded instantly (no taxes to worry about). Qantas I waited in queue forever then told 7 - 14 days to refund. After 15 days rang Qantas again with the usual wait and finally got the points refunded but still waiting on taxes. The problem was I needed the points back to rebook another trip immediately.

I am about to do another change on my rewards booking. If they offer to cancel i also will hang up and call again

Does the cancellation fine apply per flight, per journey or per itinerary? I've got 2xF returns to europe I'm going to have to forgo :(

I was on hold for 1.5 hours yesterday. Good luck with the HUACA. 😕. I’m only gold, and I just don’t understand how this business can operate like this.
