Canberra Trip [Eating tips]

Only average experience was a casual Italian place - very average food and took ages to come out... Can't remember the name!!

EDIT : l'unico was Italian restaurant to avoid.

I go to L'unico pretty often, at least once a fortnight. They've been excellent in all cases, with the exception of one particular waiter who isn't terribly flash.

Some of my best meals in Australia have been in Canberra.

1. The Ottoman - this is a Turkish restaurant. I had never eaten Turkish before so had no idea what to expect, but was assured it was excellent - and it was. Unique cuisine and the place has nice decor; a cursory glance at the other tables during sitting week revealed many prominent political and media figures dining there. They do a special kind of ice-cream that is particularly tasty.

2. Aubergine - had the best soufflé there I've ever eaten from the dessert menu. They also cook a good steak, and the entrée of squid was delightful.

Had a seriously bad experience recently at La Scala - Canberra dining 'institution' and attempted to leave a warning on an online restaurant review site... it was rejected, and I was only stating facts - no extravagant language!

So beware fellow travellers - the small oysters at $4 a pop have to be the most expensive in Canberra, and the Ravioloni All’Onorevole ($23.80 for a starter size), described as:
Prawn and crab pasta pillows served with a brandy, onions, butter and crushed tomato salsa. Finished with a splash of double cream.....

.....was a couple of pasta squares filled with what looked, and tasted like, sawdust - mainly breadcrumbs .... and a smear of red sauce on top, no evidence of brandy, onions or cream.
