The maximum value you can put on a voucher is $500

So my question is , when redeeming a flight over $500, will I still be charged the $30 credit card surcharge while booking an international flight ?
Is there any way to get around it ? Thanks.

Can you B-Pay it?

I don't think they accept BPAY over the phone.
Online redemption only allow point to point booking.

For a gift voucher - No.

Anyone booked with a gift voucher before ?
I called Qantas they told me I have to pay $30 if the voucher won't cover the cost of the flight.

Over they 'phone they may also charge a service fee.

To consistently get the best value, online is a must.

If you look at the terms and conditions for gift vouchers it states:

"Qantas does not charge a card payment fee on gift voucher purchases or redemptions".

I used a voucher to book through the telephone centre with the remaining amount charged to my credit card.
No credit card fee was charged.

But as others advise, online is a safer bet. :)

As above, have had no issues using a gift voucher for less than the total fee, and a CC for the rest, without the usual CC fee.

Actually just discovered I have a gift voucher with remaining credit, but it advises me to phone up to use it, so that'll be fun!

Sounds like you've been had (just like everyone else has indicated).

If you book over the phone using your voucher, you will be slugged a $60 booking fee (assuming you are making it from Australia).

No cc fee for the "excess". Done it several times.
The downside is that you can't use the voucher for multi-city bookings - if that's what you are wanting to do.

For me, the whole point of the voucher is to avoid paying the cc fee.

Downside to the gift voucher seems to be that there may be less flights available. Is that the experience of the other forumites?

No.

I find with credits, where you've cancelled a flight and received a credit to be used on future flights, you'll only see the same fare class and higher prices, thus you can't access some sales.

However with a gift voucher, purchased specifically as that, I can see all the latest cheap fares.

I have used many vouchers, and none have ever charged me a booking fee of any sort for any form of payment method. If only vouchers could be redeemed on multi-city bookings also!
