I'm flying Perth > Dubai > Rome with Qantas (Emirates code share).

I'm a Gold FF with about 350k Qantas points.

I'd like to be able to upgrade myself and wife, but given I purchased a sale fare this isn't possible online.

Are there other options? For example, asking when I check in, or alternatively is there a way to pay extra for a flexible fare and then upgrade?

Would appreciate the views of those with more knowledge in this area. Thanks.

Upgrade requests are only possible on Qantas marketed and operated flights.

Flights booked into sale fare buckets cannot be upgraded, either online or offline.

To upgrade you would need to effectively change your flights and rebook them into a higher fare bucket that can be upgraded. Note this will incur a change fee, the fare difference and, if making the change over the phone, an assistance fee.

See above from Red Roo. Genuine peev for us Perth people that no upgrades available on EK flights.

And for Adelaide people also. I learnt this lesson the hard way a couple of years ago.

On the flip side, EK are extremely generous with operational upgrades (freebies) to Qantas premium flyers. Well, that's our experience anyway.

LOL. They have been extremely generous to you. Most are still stuck in economy. ;)

Fingers crossed

I wouldn't bank on it, but it seems the assistance fee is likely to be waived in these sort of requests. Although depends on the how nice the agent is feeling, of course.

I dunno why Perth people bother with QF status. Why not start crediting to EK?

Because they might prefer to not fly with a stop in the Middle East?
Their direction of travel favors MH, SQ and CX?
Combined with the above, they don't often fly many domestic flight segments?

OTOH, QF does need a suitable plane available to fly PER-DXB (as well as a few other places - mostly in SE Asia)

Happy wandering
