Can I board with two VA tickets?

I recently purchased a Getaway fare for a domestic flight, then realized I needed more flexibility and SC's. Subsequently I purchased a Business fare for the same flight. I now have two tickets in my name for the same flight. Can I print the two boarding passes, board and get the SC's for both? Cancelling the Getaway fare doesn't seem to make much sense since this ticket is non-refundable so it will only benefit VA. What are my options?

You can't earn on two tickets, and if you hold two tickets on the same flight, VA may proactively cancel one (or contact you), as this is typically not allowed.

Most likely you could have converted the Getaway ticket to a J ticket, retaining some value.

The change fee was $1 more than I paid for the entire Getaway ticket which is why I didn't bother trying to upgrade it. Should I proactively cancel the ticket to avoid trouble? I thought I would be generous and let whomever was my seat mate in 6B have an empty seat next to them...

I'd contact them to sort it out. It is normally detected before flight and then you're running the risk of being interrupted at an inconvenient stage when they stop you to discuss what's going on and sort it out then.

I wouldn't expect a seat to remain empty because of this at the time of flight.

You can't board on two different tickets.
Your Getaway ticket will reflect as a no-show. Even if you check-in, it will be picked up at boarding (and cause a bit of a delay.)

You can have 2 tickets and claim SC and points for both.

The only way to do this is to have booked the 2nd seat in same cabin as an extra or so called comfort seat (usually purchased by passengers of size). These extra seats are tariffed without the taxes because no one is sitting in it.

Unfortunately your situation does not fit this circumstance.

The only way out is to try to change the J seat into a comfort Y seat. However 2xY SC is usually less than 1xJ SC.

.

Understood this is off-topic from the original question now, but I know you can earn Points on a second seat. SC? I didn't think so. Has this been confirmed somewhere?

As I explained above:

Only if the second seat is sold as an extra or comfort seat. Even Double SC offers will post for this scenario

Yes, you can certainly earn double VFFpoints and VFF SC from your own seat, and the seat next to you under what VFF call it extraseat, while QFF calls it Comfort Seat.
But you must have phoned up VFF and bought the seat next to you, but in the case of the OP, don't know on that one.
In my extraseat situation, got it this past April PER - ADL, but they do not give you another BP for the empty seat next to you though, just that the seat next to you is 99.99% guaranteed yours.
OP, not sure what VA would do if you tried to board with the seat in Y without cancelling it prior to flight, ie, you take the J seat by doing OLCI, and print out the J BP, not sure what will happen when you board, or whether you could print out 2 BP, one in J and one in Y, ie if the system will let 2 people check in with same name and same VFF #.
You could always try and see what happens, if you dare.

Could this be a way to do double DSC runs??

Yes

DSC and any points will post to both the Y seat and also the extra/comfort Y seat. So its a DDSC
You will likely have to ring up to ensure the DSC posts on the extra/comfort seat

Note:
The extra/comfort seat tariff does not include any taxes because no passenger is sitting in it but includes the luggage allowance.

Do you know if it counts as 2 eligible sectors as well?

That’s a good question. I don’t know the answer to that

On the surface it appears 2, but I would hesitate. I suspect 1 because there is only 1 passenger

Bring your cello.

Was reading somewhere that you can buy a seat for your cello/guitar so you can bring it as carry-on baggage. Might need to be a seat in the same cabin though.

You have to phone VA phone sales up, so buying 2 J seats for 1 person "should" be OK if there is capacity for 2 slots next to each other in J.
Make sure you have registered for the DSC.
Mind you, I haven't tried buying 2 J seats for 1 person... on VA or QF.

Are you sure ?????

Yes on Domestic you will effectively get double points ( as points are allocated based on $$$ spend 2 X $$$ for 2 Seats) but the SC calculation will be based on 1 person ( ie only 1 allocation )

As for the OP situation, he could end up with no seats ... as the system will look as it as a dupe booking ( same name/ same FFN) and possibly cancel

Ive got SC posted on an extraseat/ comfort seat from VA and QF. As usual this experience is historical from several years ago. So it is dated info.

I do agree that in the Op situation turning up with 2 separate bookings, 2 separate tickets and boarding passes will result in the cancellation of one

Anecdotally, 2 x points and 2 x SC have been earned.
