Buying AA Miles

Thank you Rooflyer. I have been spending some time reading lately and hope to improve my knowledge so I don't ask so many dumb questions. One thing I have not been able to find out via Google or anywhere else is if anyone is ever refused boarding just because they have a ticket bought with AA miles? Like, we are planning a trip to Europe and want to fly SYD/AUH with Etihad First Class and I just have nightmares about turning up at Sydney Airport and being refused boarding because we have a ticket purchased with miles bought from AA. Perhaps some of you more experienced people could give feedback? From what I have been reading it all looks OK, tho ..............................

It is not an issue. At all.
 
No, not an issue.

Couple of things to look out for. AA may not 'ticket' the miles flight until a couple of weeks before the flight. This is normal , but still ok to call and check.
Once ticked, be wary about making changes to the booking, which would be done via AA. Some airlines (Qatar) may cancel the ticket if that happens!! You are going Etihad, which doesn't have the same history, but if you change after ticketing, ask the AA agent to re ticket with EY there and then, rather than queuing it.

Just a caution, don't let it put you off. :)
 
You can't access the QF lounge even though AA ticket. :D

The EY lounge is ok but don't eat or drink, save it for the flight. Have fun. You'll love it.

I thought Etihad was affiliated with Virgin/Velocity so wouldn't have tried to go to Qantas, but thank you for that info.

Sent via e-mail. From the time you book, you will be able to see it under your account in AAdvantage (logged in), but it will say 'not ticketed'. When its ticketed you'll get an e-mail but in any event will see it as 'confirmed' on the web site. if it hasn't 'ticketed' within a week of going, definitely call AA and get them to expedite it (maybe 2 weeks). They have to talk to Etihad to get the ticket issued and you don't want that happening at the last minute.

You will get a PNR (something like PXF8UI) from AA with the booking, and you will deal with AA on everything, up to checking in. Etihad may have a different PNR for you (depends if they have the same booking 'engine' as AA). If/when you speak to AA at booking, ask them to give you the Etihad PNR as well, if its different. If for some reason you have to talk to Etihad, that's the reference they will want.

Giving a lot more info here than you really need, but one of the things I've learned in taking 'codeshare' flights is to arm myself with lots of info.
 
Definitely no getting in to QF or VA lounges.
In fact if you have an AA award flight even J or F on another airline you wouldn't even be allowed into an AA lounge.You have to use the lounge of the airline you are flying.Wont even let an AA LTP in.
 
It would be really good if we could merge this thread into one of the other numerous thread on much the same topic.
 
I ate at the MEL EY lounge and had several coughtails there as well, then ate on the EY A380 as well but they are stopping the A380 out of MEL aren't they...

But that's still $3.5k ++

These days I don't buy miles speculatively, I only buy them when I need them.

In saying that this deal is tempting however I've got my trips planned out for the next 12 months.
 
I bought my son 1,000 AA miles to keep his stash alive. I tried to do the $25 donation but it didn't work after 3 attempts.
