As if they're not cheap enough already! How can they afford to keep doing this stuff?

Refer someone to Mileage Plus (through mpfriends), they get 3000 points, you get 250 (plus 1000) if they fly.

Then they buy 16000 points, for US$465, and fly to Tahiti return from Perth. :)

And if you're gonna buy miles, you might as well do it in AA, where they count towards the Million Mile bonuses.

'Tis called in the industry "breakage" It's those members who never redeem their miles. Runs at about 14% and is worth approx. USD240Million to the Airline.

I think I've got a promo where it's 5000 for a referral. Even better!

Depends - if you wanted to go from Perth to Tahiti in business class (hypothetically) you would be battling to find availability with AA - even 330 days out - but would have no trouble through UA. The United miles are also quite a bit cheaper.
