That happens all the time - I cannot believe that.A known fault in the QF booking system. A worse one is where you look at J flights for example, MEL-SYD-LAX and there is a little alert saying that the SYD-LAX leg will be in Y.

I don't consider star class or whatever it's called now as a proper business class, it's more of PE standard at best.
so it seems as if it's a problem that doesn't want to be fixed.
It will even show options which would put PAX paying F fares in a Y seat!
You don't pay for an F fare when it is mixed class. I can't find the example you cited but a J! MEL-SYD-LHR with MEL-SYD in J and SYD-LHR in Y prices at 80,000 points which is 16,000 + 64,000 so SYD-LHR is priced at the economy rate.

You're quoting points.
Points redemptions are always (?) calculated per sector.
Cash fares are not.
I just checked the OP and it's evident (1) they were referring to cash fares not points redemptions and (2) the fare they are quoted is an F fare regardless of the actual class of travel. That is consistent with my experience when researching various options for my bookings over several months.

Airlines should stop this practice....
Unfortunately this practice is widespread in the industry. I agree it is appalling.
Software/search engines are not rocket science. Yes they are complex, but there is no excuse for them not operating essentially flawlessly.
If I do a search for J fares, I would expect a HUGE and CLEAR warning if a fare was going to be displayed that is not J.
