That dreaded ! just saw this and had a giggle and wondered if any one would seriously be stupid enough to book this. Looking at the 31 October MEL-LHR.

A known fault in the QF booking system. A worse one is where you look at J flights for example, MEL-SYD-LAX and there is a little alert saying that the SYD-LAX leg will be in Y.

That happens all the time - I cannot believe that.

Given there is only 1 seat left in F (fare class F1) and it wasnt sold, do you reckon they would give you the seat given you technically bought F?

This 'problem' with the QF web site stinks of bait and switch to me since so many people would not notice it and end up paying an F fare for a J seat or worse still, a J fare for a Y seat. Someone needs to call QF out on it and force them to get it fixed.

It will even show options which would put PAX paying F fares in a Y seat!

Sometimes it is offered as a legitimate option - for example if you look at flights to European destinations it will show you direct EK flights from Dubai but also flights via LHR.
As there is no F on intra-European flights you would obviously be sitting in "euro business" from LHR to LIS, MAD, CDG, AMS, CPH or where ever.
But when it's offered on sectors operated by aircraft with an F cabin I agree with the OP - who would be stupid enough to pay an F fare and sit in J or Y?

The notifications are better compared to what they were originally, so it seems as if it's a problem that doesn't want to be fixed.

The J flights with a portion (usually the longer sector) being done in Y is very common on the QF website but the results the OP got are actually worse because in his case ALL flights are done in J instead of F.
I also hate it when searching for J flights with QF and get mixed QF & JQ results or only JQ flights offered. I don't consider star class or whatever it's called now as a proper business class, it's more of PE standard at best.

I don't consider Jetstar an airline.

Airlines should stop this practice of saying its there but some legs are not, wonder what consumer affairs think about it here?.

You don't pay for an F fare when it is mixed class. I can't find the example you cited but a J! MEL-SYD-LHR with MEL-SYD in J and SYD-LHR in Y prices at 80,000 points which is 16,000 + 64,000 so SYD-LHR is priced at the economy rate.

Now that seems to be a positive enhancement as prior to the new website it would have costed out as being in one class i.e. J not J plus Y. Well done QF :)

You're quoting points.

Points redemptions are always (?) calculated per sector.

Cash fares are not.

I just checked the OP and it's evident (1) they were referring to cash fares not points redemptions and (2) the fare they are quoted is an F fare regardless of the actual class of travel. That is consistent with my experience when researching various options for my bookings over several months.

As per the example below the second option has MEL-Dubai in J whereas the flight option above is all in F and is cheaper than the F and J option :)

My apologies. I can't see the graphic on my phone. I thought the OP was talking about points.

They seem to have fixed the points pricing but not for cash. Crazy.

Airlines should stop this practice....

Unfortunately this practice is widespread in the industry. I agree it is appalling.

Software/search engines are not rocket science. Yes they are complex, but there is no excuse for them not operating essentially flawlessly.

If I do a search for J fares, I would expect a HUGE and CLEAR warning if a fare was going to be displayed that is not J.

Point of fact the search aggregators are no better. I understand that they just collect the results from the airline web sites but they could still carry out their own checks to ensure that they are offering what was requested.
