Butter matters [Danish Lurpak on board]

Perhaps it would be better to argue about the quality and source of the bread.

Though Australian butter is sometimes a nice touch, there is little doubt that Lurpak is a fantastic product.

how dare you call into question the quality/source of QFs oz based bakery suppliers.. OMG..now we are feeding the 'troll' with butter AND bread!! lol
(yes...all my posts are meant to be taken as seriously as the topic)

Thankfully the very pleasant and genial RedRoo is browsing this thread so perhaps, just perhaps QF may in time choose to run down its stocks of Lurpak and ink a deal with Murray Goulburn, Fonterra or others in Oz (who produce the mini servings of butter that airlines and similar businesses need - perhaps not all dairy manufacturers in Oz do).

If I was RedRoo though, I'd be more concerned about the repeated adverse exposure for QF of two critical letters in a row in 'The Age'/ 'SMH" Saturday travel sections, because not only is this section read in print and online in a week by a much larger audience than would view AFF in a year, it is also composed of many AB (socioeconomic) quintile readers who may not join specialist forums such as AFF, but who nonetheless in many cases travel extensively.

Granted, the choice of butter supplier may not be what the Yanks call a 'deal breaker', but nonetheless it's one of the quirky little things that people remember (and maybe even mention to their friends or family around the dinner table for a few seconds).

RedRoo seems to constructively take all sorts of matters 'on board', so perhaps this is one he can mention to the FF or passenger experience head at QF.

Actually I'd say you are wrong. The butter topic comes up every month or two on their Facebook page.. Same answer every time.. No big deal, just move along

The cynics clearly have little affinity with the 20 per cent of Australians who live outside our capital cities. Whatever the cynics think on AFF, these letters in the newspaper travel sections will be read by far more Australians than the relatively small AFF community; a lot of the readers of 'The Age' and 'SMH' travel section would agree with those letter writers, who have as much right to express their opinion as the AFF cynics.

A little more sympathy for our hardworking country cousins, please.
Sorry Melburnian1 but I fit into the cynics group, as you put it, and I also fit into the 20% group and I don't have a problem. I have asked a few of my country cousins and they don't have a problem either.

Who is to "blame" for Qantas using foreign butter? Well, frankly, its every one of us who seeks to find the lowest airfare. In response to our "collective" pursuit of the lowest cost supplier of airfares, Qantas (and Virgin and any other airline) has to find the lowest cost supplier of its own supplies. The only reason they would be using foreign butter is if it costs less than the local product. So blame the fare-purchasing public, not Qantas for this. Qantas is just responding to our demands for lower fares while trying to return a profit to their shareholders (as any business is trying to do).

There have been two letters in consecutive weeks in 'The Age' and 'Sydney Morning Herald' travel sections re how QF serves foreign (Danish Lurpak) butter in its lounges or onboard:

Traveller Letters | September 14, 2013

I am not a protectionist but given that the Australian dairy industry is unsubsidised and the Danish one (plus elsewhere in Europe) is heavily supported by the EU, isn't it about time QF bought its butter portions from an Australian or NZ manufacturer such as Murray Goulburn or Fonterra?

I have a sneaking suspicion that VA may also use Lurpak butter on its flights, but cannot definitively recall.

If that's your biggest problem you are doing quite well!

Qantas will make the best decisions for qantas. That will include jet fuel from Singapore.

Not sure if the Danish dairy industry is heavily supported by the EU

If you want wonderful butter, try Paris Creek Bio-Organic. Made from Fleurieu Peninsula Dairies in SA. Their milk is similarly good.

Lupak is not particularly cheap in the supermarket. Makes it hard to see its use being cost related.

A bit of a newbie question.

Does QF actually have anything to do with the selection of butter? Is it possible it might fall into the hands of the catering company?*

*Genuine question, I have no idea how it all works.

I agree, I think Lurpak is regarded as an entry level luxury butter.
Its pretty expensive at the supermarket but tastes far superior to Western Star etc. I also think it seems to take a little less time to become spreadable inflight than the blocks used on VA.
Lescure is delicious but I don't see QF stocking that any time soon.

This said butter being used isn't that particularly cheap in comparison to some of the local competition.

Saying that we aren't aware of any pricing so it may well be different pricing for QF compared to us plebs.

I'm sure somewhere in the world someone is complaining that their countries airline is using Australian butter and not their own..
Yeah, personally I think you should be eating NZ butter, tastes much better.
