Looking at an SC run from Maui to Port au Prince. There were some good deal KUPP/YUPP fares, but I thought I'd should have a look at americanairlines.com.au

Was surprised to see "Business Standard" fares at only an extra $100 over the KUPP/YUPP fare and on a 763 ex OGG, so much nicer than the 757.

Tried a booking - all looked good - except on the first leg, it was "Meals available for Purchase". Hmm. Put the reservation on hold, and rang the call centre to ask for booking class (couldn't see the class mentioned in the fare rules or anywhere else on the site). Turns out OGG --> DFW was in Y! The other segments were business or first.

So a bit of a trap for young players and not much good for status credits. Fare basis was I0OW, for whatever that's worth.

Yes, a good tip for anyone looking to purchase upgrade type fares is to check each segments booking class. I always do. The booking engine does throw such up from time to time, generally when there is no availability in the normal upgraded class for the fare.

Sometime you are stuck with all economy AeAgle flight on some city-pairs with there being no alternative. Most of the time these book into full Y, but even then it pay to check thay are no O or Q or N etc. At least with full Y you get "full" economy SC's.

Thanks for the reply.

The weird thing was, there was no suggestion that it was an upgrade fare. It was described as "Business Standard", and clicking on the description it stated the class was "Business Class".

I have seen "Business standard" on USA/Caribbean destinations that are less expensive than the "Instant Upgrade" fare listed to the left.
