Got a quote of around $4000 ex tax Perth-Auckland-LA in Y+.... but get this, the Y+ cabin is only available on the AKL-LAX leg but you still have to pay for the Y+ from Perth to AKL.

That is a bit of a rip dont you guys think?
You can always choose to purchase an economy ticket PER-AKL and then a Y+ ticket AKL-LAX. But it may work out more expensive!

Thats what I thought, but the TA tells me that you have to purchase it as a Y+ all the way through.....

Does NZ's on-line booking engine tell you that? It may need to be two separate tickets.

But since NZ does not offer Y+ on the PER-AKL route, you are not purchasing Y+ all the way through. You are indeed purchasing economy to AKL and Y+ to LAX. The fact that NZ choose to construct the fare in a particular manner is not relevant. If you are happy with the price then purchase it. If not, then don't.

As I mentioned before, NZ Y+ is a fairly pathetic product IMO, certainly not worth what they want. 10-20% at most over normal economy is fair value. If you are going ex Perth get a cheap flight to Singapore and then take TG ex Singapore to LAX via BKK. Will cost well under 5K SGD ( x1.36). BKK to LAX is a 340-500 non stop flight with proper shell seats

Wow that is a very long flight :(

Considering that QF is being quoted to me at $4268 on super saver, the NZ option still looks very attractive.

Reading on some other forums, people are recommending that the 747 Y+ is better than the 777 Y+.

I can't seem to choose the 747 flights (flight numbers NZ1 + NZ2) when choosing a flight from PER to LAX - the only option is the 777. Only if I choose AUK-LAX then I can choose the 747 flights.

Is this something I can request through the TA or is this imposed on purpose by ANZ?

Probably something to do with the flight timings. The NZ176 PER-AKL is an overnight flight, arriving into AKL very (before 6am). The departures to LAX from AKL are in the evening. So you will have a long stopover at AKL. The NZ6 departure to LAX (a 777 most days) is at 7:15pm, while the NZ2 (generally a 744) is more than hours later at 9:30pm. So it would make sense for a GDS to expect people would want the earlier connection. A TA may be able to book the later connection for you.

You'll definitely want the 747 if going on NZ in Y+... May be worth seeing what options exist... a day in AKL??? I dunno....

If NZ's Y+ on the 747 is a "pathetic product" then any/all Y+ are too....and none are available for 10% over Y... if you expect that to be discount Y...

More like 25-30% over Full Y.... and worth it (to me) at that level.... only partly due to the somewhat better apparent chances of a points UG clearing to Business premier from Y+ rather than Y....

NZ's Y+ sells out just about all the time AKL-LAX vv.. (as I'm sure QF's will at an even higher price premium over Y!)... YMMV of course.. but the market seemes to accept the pricing...

Sure - I wish it was less.....

I read (in Australian Aviation 07/08 Edition, I think) that NZ were replacing 744s with 772s AKL-LAX-LHR, because the reduced fuel-burn made it worth sacrificing 66 seats.

Y+ on 777 is pathetic. It is not bad on 747 but those flights are not available now as someone pointed out.

Legroom on NZ is not a problem, it is the width of the seats and hard seatbacks. SQ and TG Y+ had/have 2-3-2 configuration on 340-500, while NZ is 3-3-3, same as regular economy.

I made several trips to LA/NY on SQ premium economy, which used to be a vastly superior product. Price for discounted ticket on regular Y was 2200 SGD, unrestricted 2400 SGD. The non-stop Y+ flights were 2400 SGD. I would have gladly paid 3K+. Y+ on NZ777 is inferior to (defunct) SQ Y+ and still existing TG Y+. I would rather fly regular economy SQ on 777ER than NZ Y+

I guess since there is nothing much better on the transpacific routes ex Aus

Fools and their money are soon parted

I would pay more if it was worth it. It is not

This is a very weird connection. TG has several flights a day SIN-BKK, the one I took last 2 times had a 2.5-3 hour layover.

And 17 hours in a flat bed is better than 14 hours on a surfboard!
