Hi all, on July 18th I will be flying with my 7 month old son to the UK. Im fortunate enough to be travelling business class (sorry to other business class passengers-I appreciate everyone will be hoping not to sit next to me) I am trying to be as organised as possible so that my little one is as relaxed, happy, content and quiet as possible. Our longest flight is Melbourne-Dubai with Qantas on QF9. Iv picked this flight as my little one is likely to sleep for about 10 hours of the flight (if he sleeps as he usually does) Im wondering if someone can give me a run down of the flight in terms of when meals are served? As im flying alone il probably only be able to eat when he sleeps so im wondering if i need to pack myself lots of snacks. Iv not flown Qantas business before and the other business flights iv taken food has been served at set times. I know they may keep some food aside for me but I do not want to be a burden to cabin crew.

Thanks

Helen

You're are flying Business Class...you will not be a burden to the FAs!!! The QF FAs in Business are mostly very good and will be very helpful to you. I've had meals held back for me or given earlier if needed. Plus as mentioned there is the snack menu.

Forgot to add there will be a meal on take off and one about three hours out if QF1 is similar, also dont forget you can preorder meals!

Just remember one word........................Phenergan.

Works wonders with the littlies. And your fellow "J's" will love you.

You must do a trial run first. It made one of my kids hyperactive! It worked as its supposed to on the other one!

The OP's child is 7 months old and should not be given Promethazine.

Welcome to AFF Flyingmum :)
There are a few of us on here.
Fortunately my kids are well past the infancy stage but I do remember juggling eating and sleeping flying long haul when they were young.

I haven't flown this flight yet ( 1st trip is Sep) so cannot answer specifics of the meals.
In general you will find that the FA's in J will be as flexible around you and your son regarding meals as they can be within the confines of food safety etc.
IMHO you shouldn't need to pack snacks for yourself as there will be selected items on the menu available throughout the flight.

Best of luck and be sure to let us know how it all goes.

And children over 30 should be given redwinethazine which will put them to sleep so they don't bother the kids.

Hahaha I only just saw these replies. Ironically I actually take avomine (which is similar to phenergen) for flying as I get a bit nauseous. I actually took it for a flight whilst pregnant (with permission from dr and obgyn) they warned me that my baby would be very still for about 24 hours because some may cross over to him and make him drowsy-well, 24 hours of agony followed with a baby that would not stop wriggling and kicking. I ended up standing for most of the flight bent over a chair, struggling to breath. So I suspect my little one might be in the 5% that go hyper on phenergen lol. Anyway he is too young this time to try it.

Slight panic yesterday when i got him measured. He is 73cms long, qantas bassinets according to the website are 71cms!! Im hoping we get away with it-he curls up a bit when asleep.

I have another question...with the chauffer service-has anyone used this with a baby. I only need to use it to the airport in the UK (Cant deal with the emotional goodbye scene at the airport-too public and too hard) but im wondering how it works with a baby. I know that legally a baby can travel on my lap in backseat of a taxi but im not sure if a limo service counts? I rang the airline but they couldnt guarantee a child seat or put me in touch with the limo company so I could ask them.

Thanks everyone for your feedback!

Just thought id jump back in and say the flight went really well. My little one slept for about 10 hours of the 14 hour flight, waking a couple of times for a feed. No crying-slept during take off and laughed during landing! The qantas crew were awesome, held food for me, held the baby to let me go to the bathroom, and were just generally helpful. My little one only just fit into the bassinet so this will be the last trip id do with him on my lap I think (well long trip anyway). The shorter emirates flight was also ok-although the crew were less helpful and friendly on the whole.
Thanks for all the advice :)

Just got a points upgrade to J for QF9 tomorrow night, :) , so thanks for the meals info - I was wondering, what with the 23:35hrs departure - looks like dinner in the lounge before we board could be the way to go, if the food in Q J MEL lounge is OK...

I hope that the return QF2 upgrade request is as successful, but somehow I don't think so, as end of school holidays, but we shall see! :-(

QF MEL J lounge can be a hit or miss in terms of its food offerings. Sometimes great other times very average. Sometimes I have a quick snack in Nandos before entering the lounge lol just in case. Enough to get me through the plane if nothing decent in the lounge, but not too much so that I can't eat more if there's good found on offer in the lounge.
