Building a stronger Qantas

I actually just started a separate thread on this - it's been confirmed that the new airline is shelved in favour of a stronger tie-up with MH.

Well bless my distrusting soul. Who would have thought that it was a bluff to get a better negotiating position?

Interesting how we know exactly what they were or were not planning and are in a position to fully comment on whether a plan was partly, fully or over baked...

There is the small fact that the European debt crisis is growing and its influence on Asia (and Australian) economies is real and changing.

what is more interesting is exactly how qantas did not know about the European debt crisis... this is not new... been around for months... and financial analysts have been commenting for months.

there have been many discussion topics on the potential failings of this new airline, from the name to the aircraft type to the premium configuration, you name it.

the current I,pending crisis is not in the least unforeseen....

The name wasn't announced but it was decided that it was wrong...
The fit out wasn't announced but it was decided it was wrong...

The aircraft have been debated and personally I havent seen convincing evidence that it was wrong. Phrases like "I don't want to sit on a A320 for seven as I don't like them" are not convincing to me.

Also some indications it hasnt been killed:

This would be great if true. MH can't join OneWorld quickly enough for me. I was wondering all along how the new kid in the OW clan would view big brother QF starting a new airline in direct competition with them ... didn't seem to make sense to me ...

That to me is a sign that the deal is dying if not dead - there's a lot of "we're committed to a variety of options in Asia" rather than the solid promises that were around earlier in the year.

I think that killing RedQ is a really positive move for Qantas. Choosing not spreading out to ANOTHER airline and focussing on rebuilding the businesses that are in place today seems to be a very logical move - that would be a Phase 2 or Phase 3 in the next few years..

Only thing is the European debt crisis and its ramifications aren't something that has just sprung up.
Surely QF would be watching the foreign markets very closely, it would be fool hardy to plan any operations otherwise.
