Accidents do happen, better than the water landing actually happening, but of the passengers react in a bad way to an emergency message, then they should really look at what can be done to make sure they react in a better way. Panicking isn’t going to help them if an accident does happen after all.

I am not sure what you are trying to say here Sam, and it could well be a problem with me!!!

I am not really sure how you can control or change the emotions of a group of people after telling them they will be crash landing into water environment. I agree that panicking doesnt help, a given really. To that end do you tell them the truth?

Is it sometimes better to be misleading at the risk of being accused of acting 'illegally' or even worse unethically?.

I meant they played the message accidentally, excrement happens, but based on the reactions, maybe they need to rethink the message on the tape or how they presented it. I know people would naturally panic, but there’s got to be a better way of giving the message in an accident that doesn’t give such a bad response, and perhaps they can learn from this mistake, and develop a better message when an accident is going to happen.

That’s all I meant.

Nothing like the truth !!!!

Any suggestions your end?

'There maybe a possibility of a water landing'................keep those life vests close now......'

I’m not trying to joke around, I just think they need to test announcements and find one that’s the least likely to panic everyone, while giving information and preparing them.

There’s lots of ways of saying things, clearly pax on this flight couldn’t handle the announcement, so BA needs to work out how they can change it so when they need to use it, the pax aren’t scared out of their lives, but better prepared for the situation.

My thoughts are that they probably already do this.

I can't imagine a way to create a msg that wouldn't incite panic.

This happened recently where an airline (lingus?)played the wrong clip in French by accident, so it does happen

There are no good ways to deliver these messages. It is a matter of life and death and people do naturally panic.

So yes, maybe BA is trying to set the standard very low and then say that there is no emergency landing, but just getting to destination late :)

What a boo boo to make.

It would be a good excuse to try on an airline life jacket

I think Sam your best point would be made by way of example. And the first one that springs to mind is dear old Captain Eric Moody, in command of Speedbird 9 on the 24th June 1982 (KUL-PER)

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them under control. I trust you are not in too much distress.

cheers

There's an Air Crash Investigation episode "Falling from the sky" re above incident which like most of the ACI episodes, highlights how the aviation industry learn from the potential disasters and introduce policies to (hopefully) avoid the same thing happening again.

There is also a book "Emergency on the Flight Deck" by Stanley Stewart on this incident.

thnxs OZ, it was a fascinating incident, which we have learnt a great deal from, at least more than most. Even recently they grounded Europe as a result of volcanic ash creating all sorts of other issues.

Always stay calm and work the problem!!!!

cheers

I love that show, but I'm not allowed to watch it if SWMBO is within earshot :D

Mistakes do happen but that is one announcement I hope I never to hear in the air.

Unless one has had special training wouldn't panic be the natural reaction in those circumstances?
