Brisbane (BNE) Airport - possible weather delays

Well, if the operating aircraft can't get to BNE because those flights are cancelled, then it makes sense. So are you on one of the scheduled to depart flights @JohnK?
QF596 landed at 4:55pm at Gate 19. My flight QF563 is due to depart from Gate 19. I think airport still closed.

Spoke too soon. QF563 cancelled. Makes no sense. I'd love someone to explain this some day.

Now what? No announcement. Huge queues in lounge for replacement flights. Could be here for a few hours at least.

Rain has just started to set in I live 10 mins from CBD to the west. I don't like your chances John K

Could be a raft of reasons:

- continuing threat of second thunderstorm
- No aircraft (as it would have been operating from another port)
- No crew to operate (existing crew with existing plane wherever)
- no replacement aircraft available in BNE (like a 747 or A380 would be nice to try and shift maximum number tonight) and no reserve crew available
- continuous lightning (I can still hear thunder) within 5 kms of BNE, so no ground crew can operate to put bags and cargo aboard

There's my 2c worth

it's just started to rain again at Chermside (where I work).

BOM radar doesn't look good - the cell is expanding: 256 km Brisbane (Mt Stapylton) Radar Loop

@QF WP the aircraft is here. Has been here for a while. Airport open and no flights called.

There are now 6 SYD flights cancelled. The queue is not moving. Qantas used to be good with these delays. Have they lost staff? At this rate don't like my chances for a flight tomorrow either.

I've been rebooked on the 3:05pm flight tomorrow. That was done automatically. Allocated 5D.

The queue for accommodation was long and slow plus they ran out of hotels. They mentioned you can book your own hotel and you'll be reimbursed up to $200. Booked Pullman online and will get refund later.

Any storms predicted for tomorrow? Fun, fun, fun.

Sorry john but BOM is saying showers all day and a risk of a severe thunderstorm.

Tomorrow?  :(

Final of the Club knockout tomorrow. Have asked to reschedule. And quarter final of match play on Sunday.

Well I’m sure that around 2:30pm yesterday there would have been delays and cancellations - I was walking into a meeting at Fortitude Valley yesterday at 2pm and the thunderstorm was building. About 10 mins later 3 thunderclaps in close proximity and the third was directly overhead as the lightning followed within a second. One poor girl in the cafe was a shivering mess with her hands over her ears

Scary that last cloud...

Scary that last cloud...

Oh yes, that's got heavy rain, hail and high winds written all over it. Wouldn't want to be anywhere near it.

I didn't have a change to look at FlightRadar 24 as I was in a meeting, but I'll bet there were delays in flights leaving from other ports (coming to BNE) ad those already in the air woul have entered holding patterns around Ipswich/Amberley (for those coming Internationally or ADL/PER) or Coolangatta (for those approaching from the south). I've never looked to see where the holding patterns are for those coming from regional airports, must check out next time there's a storm in BNE (another likely this week).

Certainly i've had a hold in the past north of Redcliffe coming in on the Dash 8 from HTI.

Maybe @AviatorInsight would know the standard hold points to the north?

There’s SMOKA (40nm NNW of BNE) which is the main one we usually go round and round at. Depending on how bad it is then I have held at waypoint EAGLE (near Gayndah) before also.

Back to more normal summer storms after a drought from hell. I hope the current rain gets out to areas that have been dry for so long.
Queensland weather can be quite frightening when a storm hits.
