I am not a business traveller but fly with QF to the USA a few times per year to visit my son, hence have silver status which helps achieve points business upgrades on those long flights!

We just returned from a trip to Europe flying with EK (and booking with EK) but linking our QF FF numbers - got QF points but as expected, I did not get any status credits allocated.
We are flying to Europe again next year (To EK flight destinations) and I have since read that if I book through QF choosing the QF code-share flight options I will also get status credits.

Question - what (if any) are the disadvantages to doing this? From my research to date I understand we can select seats (VERY important to me!) through the EK website. I am vegetarian so presume I arrange meals through EK also. I am aware that we can't apply for points upgrades on EK metal - that's OK as we have daughter in tow :)

Are there any disadvantages to not booking direct with Emirates? (prices for the dates on both QF/EK websites are roughly the same at this stage).

@lisa31jane , as you indicated, the main difference between booking with EK flight number rather than QF codeshare flight numbers on EK metal is the former does not earn Status Credits.

Qantas and Emirates are pretty much in sync. Note that if you book with the QF code, you still need to use the EK web site to select seating, special meals etc. . Generally the Qantas booking reference will work on the EK site (but show the EK reference instead once you are into the booking).

There can be a difference in price when booking codeshare flight numbers verses operating airline flight numbers.

I have noticed that sometimes the discount fares have been sold out of one particular codeshare flight (Eg that I saw, EK2 & EK408, the 408 had discount on the QF code, but the 2 didn't) so it pays to scroll down as you could still earn some SCs just maybe not for all segments (good if you can save money)
