Hi All

Fair way in advance, but next October I'm flying QF11 SYD-JFK via LAX. I understand the second leg of this route uses metal from QF15 (BNE-JFK via LAX).

Mum will be in LA and wants to get the same flight to JFK with me - anyone know if it's possible to book the second leg of this route? Call centre currently has >30mins wait time.. sigh.

Any help appreciated!

EDIT: Did some more googling and it appears that it's not possible to book an internal USA flight without a transpac segment - apparently illegal? Can anyone confirm?

Only if it is sold to her as part of an international QF ticket.

Assuming she's also coming from Aus, she can fly (for example) SYD-LAX (stopover) LAX-JFK on one ticket, but she can't book that as 2 separate tickets, or the LAX-JFK sector on its own.

Yes. Non US carriers cannot carry domestic only passengers.

Booking the QF LAX-JFK flights as a standalone is cabotage, a right that the US does not give to non US carriers. Booking such a flight requires having an international flight to/from the US booked as part of the same ticket.
Under the limits on these flights from the US DoT, QF11 LAX-JFK then a flight to Europe would be allowed, as would QF18 JFK-LAX, then on to Asia.
However, other airlines *coughUAcough* have been known to complain about the QF "domestic" flight and has taken QF to the DoT over it before. Thus QF limits the flight to just carrying QF pax to/from JFK and Australia.
Legally, you could get a JL ticket from NRT-LAX, stop, then QF LAX-JFK, but QF has transferred such tickets to onto AA flights when found.
