Hi all,

I did the stupid thing of booking and paying for 2 x $2000 flights for a friend of my wife and her daughter.

I did so because my wife begged me to, there was a Qantas sale on finishing up that day, and her friend did not have a credit card and the travel agents had closed for the day.

So her daughter gave me the cash for one flight $2000 and she said she would give me the cash for her flight the next day. Next day comes and she asks for a few extra days, then she tells me she has some unexpected expenses and can't pay for a few weeks. I said ok no problem. A few weeks pass and now she is saying that she can't and won't pay me for the flight and there is nothing I can do about.

Is there anyway I can cancel her flight and get a refund or Qantas voucher in my name? It was a sale flight - so no refunds allowed.

You will lose some $$$ canceling and getting a credit but I believe you can do, and I would. Both tickets too... Take the amount off what the cancellation fee is and get her the change so you aren't out of pocket..

what a dog thing to do.. hope u get success!

could u take it up with your credit card provider too?

Hi doobynuts,

Welcome to AFF.

I would certainly put the idea to them that you planned to do what nlagalle has suggested and see what response they give. I'm glad they are your 'friends' and not mine.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Yeah they are not our friends anymore. I haven't called Qantas yet - just seeing if the pros 'you guys" knew anything. Cheers

Might be more fun to set up a QFF account in her name, log in and cancel only the return leg of the journey. Hopefully she wont find out until she is stuck somewhere.
She has only paid you for 2 one way flights after all.

I can see why. If you aren't speaking to them, just cancel the flights.. You should have the booking number and as you made it you can cancel it. Then put the change aside and wait for them to contact you.

Let us know how you go too!

That is bordering on fraud though.

Kalboy, you are a devious so-and-so. I'm still laughing at your suggestion, although to get the full benefit it'd be a lot funnier if you could see her face at the time!

Put it into a voucher, do a name change and then maybe refund the amount less change fees?

You could give us a hint as to her email address and she could cop a pasting all round from some dud yahoo/hotmail/gmail accounts.

This is what I'd do. Cancel. Get refunded the original fare minus the cancellation fees. Take the cancellation fees out of the $2000 you've already been given and refund the difference. The only person I really feel sorry for then is the daughter who has to try and get the cash back from her mother.

Rock and a hard place.

The problem with cancelling may be getting name changes done.

I'd ask Qantas, and if needed perhaps seek some legal advice. They may be able to force them to pay.

But as the person who's paid, surely doobynuts can cancel any leg he wants? Without joining up in the 'friend's" name?

He can cancel the flights, but opening a FF account in someone else's name would be fraud.

Yeah i have her reference number so I can log in and cancel it that way but doesnt she still get the credit voucher?

No it should go to you Asti is your cc. How was it booked? Did you do it via their account? Or did you do it yourself?

Either way a call to the service centre shudder result in a voucher in your name.
