hi all,

we're coming back SIN-SYD in a couple of weeks and have the option to BTC on a 7:05am flight so options are brekky and lunch.

if we BTC can we change our mind and order from the normal menu? or are you 'stuck' with what you've ordered?

Cheers

Hi all

Hoping for some food advice as this will be my first time in SQ F!

I've never bothered with BTC when flying in J but thought I'd check with the experts on these coming flights:
- MEL to SIN (F) 0105-0545 supper
- SIN to ICN (F) 0925-1640 lunch
- HKG to SIN (J) 1850-2250 dinner
- SIN to PER (J) 0010-0520 breakfast

I have read through this read and it seems like the general consensus would be to avoid BTC. However, as most of the posts are earlier this year, has anything changed?

What do you recommend for my specific flights above?

Appreciate the help!

Cheers

I've not bothered with BTC in a long time but Braised Soya Flavoured Duck with Yam Rice was available on the regular onboard menu when we flew SINLHR in Oct. It was delicious and almost as yummy as the ones I've had on the ground at my favourite hawker centres! Albeit too much rice. The Chilean sea bass Bouillabaisse style ain't bad either when I had it ex-HKG in 2009, unsure if they've changed the recipe as part of the new BTC menu.

I've found the onboard menu more than adequate however and haven't felt the need to BTC apart from the initial novelty, however I might BTC when I next fly SQ just to have the duck dish again in case it's gone from the normal menu!

And be sure to try the wagyu beef burger with foie gras and fried quail egg in the Private Room. Goes really well with the La Grande Dame 2004 or the Charles Heidsieck 2000 (the latter available in the normal Flounge - but they'll happily serve it to you in TPR).

Hmm tried to embed some pics from Facebook but it didn't work...

Avoid BTC, are you kidding! The standard of the normal menu is excellent and I only use BTC to sample something that is a regional speciality I otherwise would not get on board. I have had some great BTC meals. I have not checked meals available for your specific flights, I'll leave that up to you, but I can highly recommend the Beef Rendang and the Lamb Shank Curry.

I'll second the lamb shank curry. In fact I think I ordered it on prozacs recommendation . Have it with a nice cold tiger
Sounds perfect. lol
On one flight the CA was asking me how I enjoyed the BTC meal (Lamb Shank Curry) because there was discussion in the galley that because I did not appear to be Asian they thought the order must have been wrong.

I'm now reminded that I had the lamb shank curry ex-MEL. It was really nice and not at all spicy. The meat was just right, juicy, tender and literally fell off the bone - somewhat unusual for inflight food. I had the opposite issue as prozac - the crew saw an Asian face and were worried that it's not as spicy as I'd liked especially when they found out that I'm originally from Malaysia. I had a hard time convincing them that I don't eat spicy food haha, they thought I was just being nice. Went down really well with a bottle of Krug to myself and then some. :)

Lol.

The CAs told me they like it when a passenger changes their mind about having the Lamb Shank Curry or the Beef Rendang and opts instead for the in-flight meal. Now if that isn't a recommendation. ;)

Sorry to resurrect this sleepy thread.
Have a J 388 departing at 21.00 SIN-MEL. Thinking about the lobster thermidor (again) but also about getting a bit of shut-eye.
Any thoughts on this for dinner so late at night? Anyone know how soon after departure the dinner is served? Or is it even available?

As you all know doubt know , reheating food tends to dry out the quality of most meals. Also with lower oxygen cabin pressure and noise from engines all tends to sap efficiency of our taste buds.

Hence I always try to have dishes with lots of gravy or sauces. I found the lamb shank curry , the meat was dry and the meal was generally too heavy for duration of the flight. The nasi lemak was shocking especially the egg component. Satay even worse, drier.

However my recent dish of laksa , as shown in the picture was absolutely perfect. Will be ordering this for now on when available for flights leaving Singapore

I loved the scrambled eggs with caviar as I don't get that at home. Now that was a very nice breakfast treat.

Agreed - this was on the menu for my flight to LHR and it was delicious. Also a nice surprise for me as I hadn't read about it before the flight.

We have a suites flight at the end of May CDG-SIN-SYD.

In manage my bookings, meal selection, there is no BTC in the drop down list for the CDG-SIN segment.

Is anyone able to confirm that this is not offered on that segment?

I don't think we will need it on the SIN-SYD segment after eating in TPR.

"After departure"... but IIRC they do a beverage service first while the meals are heated. If you decide to eat you are usually up for at least 1.5 - 2 hrs.

BTC is only available out of certain ports and the range of options varies (as the contract catering companies need to prepare the meals in each city). SIN has the best / full range.

Neil Perry (and others) have regularly been quoted as saying that braised meats are one of the "best" foods to reheat, so I usually skew my meal choices towards a braised meat if available.

The curries reheat pretty well too.

Looks like BTC is out for this trip

Minor problem.

On a recent flight in Business, OH ordered Nasi Bryani whilst I got the seared veal fillet with crumbed hazelnuts. Both delicious and far more appetising than the normal onboard menu. The veal was surprisingly tender and juicy for an inflight meal.
