Is it possible to book an award seat online then buy the miles required ?. (rather than calling)

yes, you can create the booking and put it on a five day hold.

You can then purchase points - the normally come though pretty quickly, but at worst within 24 hours.

Once done you can complete (pay for) the booking online.

All must be done within the hold time.
