Qantas had to cancel QF785 (Syd - Adl) last night. While landing in Sydney last night, the plane flew through a swarm of bogon moths and took one into the pitot tube of the air speed indicator. It was going to take at least 90 mins to clear it and this would have put us well past the 2300 curfew in Adelaide. Qantas identified a replacement aircraft, but were unable to get curfew dispensation from the authorities.

The process of dealing with overnight accommodation and travel arrangements for all passengers was well handled with at least 8 staff manning the Service Desk to clear the backlog. Plenty of announcements to keep us informed. Special line for J and WP passengers.

Interesting side note. I checked my account this morning and note that I have received both miles and SC credits for my cancelled flight???

I've been flying regularly (at least twice a month for the last 30 years - weekly commute for the past 6 years) and this is my first cancelled flight.

I thought the situation was well handled by Qantas - and in the main, well accepted by most passengers.

Could easily hold a flight up for 90 minutes, or at least an attractive cabin crew member!
 
I liked hearing that it was handled well - particularly that WP and J got their own line.

It's the little touches that Qantas does sometimes which to some extent helps me want to keep WP.

I work to this as well, and this is where the loyalty program is a two way street, win win, so long as each party feels as they are being rewarded for their loyalty.
 
It is good to know that Qantas was able to handle the situation exceptionally well.

It was interesting that it was J and WP not OWE, thats one good reason to stay with QFF if you use QF mostly.
 
Just as a final note to this, I received points and SC's for both the cancelled flight and the flight that I eventually travelled on.

Shhhhhhh, its not hard to track down and remove, but congrats, you win some and lose some.
 
Weeeeeeeeeeeeell!

As a last "final note", not only did I get points and SC for the cancelled flight, but I also got in the mail today a nice apology note with a voucher for $250 worth of flights.

Mrs Ikara is delighted - happy for me to get home late again. Hmmmmm, can I use that? Only joking!!!

$250
less the QF telephone booking fee
less the newly increased credit card fee
less the difference between the cheapest flight online and the flight you can book over the phone
less the % of passangers that wont use the voucher before the 6 month expiry

Equals: the real cost to QF about $1.50

But atleast it sounds good to 90% of the recipients!
 
I actually used the $300 voucher I got for failed AVOD to offset part of my CircleAsia ticket - quite good value... for my boss that is...

Its a myth that the aircraft ran into a swarm of moths. The truth is that the aircraft in front had a leak from the economy class lav :shock:

I've been Platinum for about 10 years. I've been flying with Qantas for about 30 years. I think I travelled on an Ansett aircraft 2 or 3 times when Qantas put me on an Ansett flight for whatever reason. I've never been on a Virgin aircraft and have no intentions of ever doing so.

I thought that Qantas handled the whole event very well and I don't need "naysayers" like yourself to give me or Qantas a hard time. Qantas is a means of transport from one airport to another, but one that I prefer to use, and am very happy to use and to continue to use.

To paraphrase Mr Rudd, "Am I a Qantasophile, yes I am". My apolgies if that clashes with your preferences!

I aint gonna change!
