On the very day news breaks that a second main runway will start construction this year, comes the news a cargo plane has taken out the main runway after doing a wheels up landing!

Hey Markis,

They have already started construction on the 2nd runway some time ago, nothing major just earthworks.

The freighter has been winched off the runway, and services are back to normal.
The QF LAX BNE flight nearly made a stop at the Gold Coast, but all is well now.

Not according to BAC

CEO Julianne Alroe confirmed yesterday that work to build the 3300 metre runway bed into Moreton Bay will start in the second half of 2012.
"Because of the quality of the land at the airport, which is an old river mouth, it will be a very long and slow build," she said.
"The first stages of the runway will start at the end of this year and we expect to see the runway in operation by 2020.
"The first phase of construction involves site preparation, drainage works and service relocation. Sand extraction is expected to start in mid-2013."
Originally Brisbane Airport Corporation set aside 38 hectares of wetlands to help preserve the habitat of the "threatened" and elusive Lewin's Rail.

I don't, one of the first steps in construction requires the closure of the viewing area, it's still open, much to my sons delight. It's the only reason I have been keeping a close eye on developments, the place also makes a very nice waiting area ;).

Most likely the "pre-construction" and/or mobilisation phase has begun. It's amazing how much can be done before construction starts

Maybe that's the case, construction was put on hold due to the GFC but with a lag of 8 years and the recent growth I wonder if in hindsight the decision was a bit premature, it's already quite common to see significant delays at BNE, even when JohnK is not flying :p.

Dumb question, but why wouldn't they have put it down on the cross runway? I'm assuming it was a metro. That way the main runway would have been unaffected

Noise abatement, the good folks at Shorncliffe and Margate may like the smell of kero in the morning but not the sound of turboprops at 3 AM. I think you will find there was no notice of the issue till landing, I have had to close a few runways in my time thanks to FF, freighter forgetfulness.

Aircraft was a Toll operated Metroliner VH-UZA. Pilots were aware of undercarriage problem and advised of a wheels up landing about 15 minutes before the touchdown(crash) which occurred at 2:31 am local. Both pilots uninjured

There you go, not a ff case in this case! Must have been an interesting landing at night, probably going with the longer runway for obvious reasons.

Pilots also mentioned it would be a fast landing, long slide so runway choice was made for them by the sound of it. Flap issue as well points to a major hydraulic failure.

A bit of quality reporting there. If they don't land on their undercarriage, how else do they land?

"
Light plane landed on its undercarriage at 2.30am

Their floats of course, not that many metros have those.
