Biggest Travel Regret?

Now you've got me thinking of taking my Mum to Europe next year ... She's "only" been to Fiji and Shebangabang.

Good idea.

I'm starting to think of the next overseas trip to take my Mum on. Fiji was the last one, and before that it was a 2 week cruise around the South Pacific (Vanuatu, New Caledonia, etc).

I'll probably end up taking her to Thailand. She's always talked about wanting to go there (and I haven't been yet either)!

I took my parents to Koh Samui in February and they enjoyed it immensely! Next time I'll take them to BKK and see what they think of that (they already thought that Koh Samui was busy and hectic )

You've captured of few of my "travel regrets" here:-

1. Straight from school to work - no "schoolies" back in my day - grunt...
2. Waiting so long to travel to the US thinking that I wouldn't enjoy it
3. Standing beside the USS Midway in San Diego and not going on it - (thanks to robd jnr)

Best non regret:-

Realising now what a privilege it was, (no longer available) that I got my daughters into the coughpit on a United Airlines flight back in 1998 from NZ to Mel.

Midway and r d jr???

Biggest regret?

I was suppose to be in Madrid at the time of the World Cup Final two years ago, but instead decided a couple of weeks beforehand to rearrange my Spanish leg of that trip for later that week.

All I got was 80 million weeping Germans in the semis instead...

SWMBO has been on the flight deck of a QF 747 twice last year to take pictures for the kids in the childcare centre she works in. She just asked the cabin crew during the flight and both times she was successful, as she was already sitting on the UD it was easy enough for the capt to let her in when the other pax went downstairs. The kids loved the pictures of their class mascot with a real pilot :D

2004. Was a poor uni student on my electives then. Remember though this was before I had experienced travelling in J. US$100 upgrade was offered at boarding gate. It's a no brainer, but US$100 was a lot to me then!

Can relate to this.. I took a 42 hour train ride from Calcutta to Bombay back in the day.. (Bombay Mail) second class sleeper..
as I wanted to save a few bucks & was untrusting of those dodgy Indian Airlines of the day.. Still have less than enchanting flashbacks of those chai wallahs & putrid toilets..

I took my mum to Thailand a few years ago. She loves elephants & i was hoping to take her to Chang Mai - they have elephant sanctuaries you can stay at & feed/bathe them.. but we didn't make it there this time. Mum still talks about our stay at the Bangkok Pullman (exec floor).. infinity pool, lush surrounds..great place.

Then i was in Malaysia for a few months & saw some bargain Air Asia flights & suggested mum come over for a couple of weeks, so she did. I was doing 'buddhist stuff' with a Tibetan Lama & thought mum would be more interested in the massive KL shopping malls, but to my surprise (shock, actually) she decided to come out on soup kitchen runs in the back alleys of KL... met the Lama... became his new favorite.. fell down into a ditch - Drs had to cut off her trousers to patch her up, but amazed no bones broken... and came home (limping but oddly happy) and a buddhist!!

I'm not sure what the moral to this story is... but things can get weird when you take your mum on overseas holidays!

Sounds like your Mum is very fortunate to have you take her away on holidays Misstam.

Enjoy those times you get to spend with her. They are precious.

Those back alleys in KL are most unteresting & come with complimentary large rats as entertainment whilst 'chowing" down on the laksa..
Lucky the lama & not the llama with hats (YouTube) was there to offer some spiritual fulfillment..
Interesting reading :D

My only real travel regret was not going to Germany to watch the 2006 world cup. I just started a new job and wanted to get my career off the ground. I said to myself, it's a lot of money to waste and knowing my luck the socceroos would get eliminated in the first round.

The socceroos did so well, and everyone looked like they had a great time. Knowing Germany a bit more now than I did then makes it even harder knowing I missed out on something really special.

But like everything in life you learn from your mistakes. If I can go to anything now I rarely say no or make excuses. The Bossreggie lunch is something that I recently had the privilege to attend, and something that I really enjoyed.

Ive been talking about taking my parents to the US for ages, but have always made excuses. Reading this thread has changed my perspective on things and I might just book those tickets for next year. I love being part of AFF, it's had some an amazing impact to my life!

Have just read through the forum. And granted I'm only quite young, but I can't think of any regrets. For life in general I try not think of 'regrets' - everything happens for a reason or if you got any value from it, then it was worth it!

As for parents / traveling with them, well my mother is pretty much a gypsie and jut constantly travels the world. And my father is quite happy not leaving his town. Polar opposites really ;-)

Definitely a white christmas. I can remember when I was a 4 to 7 year old kid running outside our Mooloolaba holiday house at 6 in the morning on christmas day to see the snow. Always missed it. Since accumulating points from 95/6 Concord was a definite possibility but never happened. But the white christmas is definitely on the horizon for 2013 0r 14.

Oh that's just reminded me of a regret!

When I was in Europe last year, I left on December 20 (Two weeks earlier than planned) of course, the next day it snowed. Would have loved to had a white Christmas.

in LA with a friend on the 3rd St Promenade. we had agreed not to pay money to pan handlers. one had a sign that said 'Funniest joke in the world for $1' ... we agonised over our commitment and stuck to it. I still want to know what that joke was. circa 2006.

Regret: I was in West Germany in the mid 80s and didn't visit West Berlin and so not realising the full import of the wall coming down.

Non-regret: Visiting Berlin last year.

For those who have missed the Concorde, there is one in a hanger that you can walk through in the Musee de l'Air et de l'Espace in Paris.
