Biggest Airport Rip-Offs?

Its a listed company... buy shares... call it a refund

With MAP (owners of SYD), you'd also need to buy shares in Macquarie Bank as they channel commission back to the parent company. Then there are the overpaid directors and way too many people taking cream off the top.

Not really a good way to even start to recoup the rip-offs at SYD!

Minimising any spending with them is a much better option IMHO. I can generally get through SYD without spending any money which is about as big an impact as I can manage.

I guess the only next option is to avoid the place all together. Pity that cannot be done :!:

I can't remember the last time I spent anything at SYD. probably before I was a QP member

Luggage Trolleys take the cake for me.
$4 bucks to hire a trolley to move luggage a couple of hunred metres max :(.

this is my approach as well.

Thank goodness that good wheeling bags are more normal these days.

Now I hardly ever get a trolley at all. Not only can they cost money, but there is always a rush for them and they take up a lot of space around the carousel.

The federal government sold Sydney airport to a private company, Macquarie Airports, which now calls itself MAp, and is no longer related to the bank. As the only commercial passenger airport in Sydney, the airport now adds surcharges to almost everything. This is what happens when monopolies are sold off to private companies. Liberal Party voters should be very happy about this.

For some reasons, I just feel that even if airports are in the public's hands (i.e., govt owned, regardless of whether they're from the left or right), we'll still be staring at a lot of these fees and charges mentioned in this thread.

I don't have a problem paying for things but only if I get value from it. Look at SYD, despite all the fees one gets charged with driving there (including using a taxi), the roads surrounding SYD are messy and always jammed. Try going to the airport by car on a Friday avro or a Sunday avro, I've yet to make a trip from the CBD in under an hour during these times.

What have they actually done to improve traffic flow, apart from diverting you to spend more money (e.g., parking)? Of course, MAp will blame the state govt, yet MAp are happy to impose fines and fees at the same time.

ONE lane exit for cabs at BNE Dom, with a pile of broken wooden barrier arms lying next to the coin chute as testimony to cabbie frustration.:evil:

From the courier mail last month on this issue:

TAXI drivers at Brisbane Airport are ramming boom gates and tailgating other cabs in a bid to escape the $3 airport levy.

The problem has become so bad, closed-circuit TV cameras and a sign have been installed, warning errant cabbies that if they break a gate, they will have to pay to fix it.

Mr Davies said there had been some technical issues with electronic tags issued in previous years that had led to the return of the "coin bucket" system.

"You do end up with a few trying to get away from the airport quickly, tailgating and taking the boom gate with them," he said.

"Possibly they are trying to avoid the toll. It's ridiculous behaviour.

"We don't want to see those boom gates damaged by cabbies.

"There is a toll and that is recoverable from passengers. Let the passengers know."

A Brisbane Airport Corporation spokeswoman said problems with the electronic tag system had been fixed by returning to the coin bucket. She said CCTV was installed throughout the airport.

On two occasions in recent weeks the boom gate was broken and replacement booms were lined up.

Queensland Taxi Council chief executive Blair Davies said there was no excuse for cabbies to ram the gates.

I tend to catch a taxi as it's usually < $25 compared to the $18 for the train.

 those prices cannot be correct. As an example the train is $16.40 from lidcombe and there is no way that a taxi would be <$25 from lidcombe. A taxi is about $25 from central station and the train to the airport is $15 from central (and can be as low as $13.40)

Not really MAP pays decent dividends in their own right and I think that MACBank no longer manage MAP and so don't get any management fees. (unless that was MIG)

At Perth domestic you can usually grab an abandoned one for free at the departures area, while waiting for the bags to appear on the carousel.
I do this as a matter of principle, not just because I’m a cheapskate.:)

Transport to the airport, of which usually an airport transport surcharge of sorts is added on. Probably not the airport's fault, though.

Not every airport, but it is in Sydney. (the airport's fault)

Trolleys are free at Brisbane International - a big tick for BAC management, well done.
Interestingly Smarte Carte (which runs the trolley services in Australia) is owned by MacQuarie too so the chances of getting them for free at any MAC owned airport (Sydney) would be absolute ZERO !!!!!

At both MEL and SYD, trolleys are "free" for international arrivals, but are charged for at domestic.
