Recently FlyBuys members were sent invitation to get NAB credit cards and they were offering 5000 points.
There were no mention about annual fees. When I called, they said that there is in fact an annual fee of $26.00.
I think it is not legal not to disclose the annual fee. Will ACCC take action?

Are you sure there was no mention of annual fees?

Was an application form enclosed, sure there was no mention in the T&C attached to the application form?

The ACCC won't take any meaningful action against anyone, Fels will just posture and pontificate to get his ugly mug on the telly, every day.

That limp-wristed communist still hasn't come up with ANYTHING of substance against the oil companies, despite inviting the TV cameras along for all of his "raids" months ago.

Alan Fels - your tax dollars at work. Think it's good value? I think we get better value from dole bludgers.

NAB FlyBuys Offer

I think FlyBuys is the most useless system there is around - starting at the points accrual and it goes on. Take a long, hard look at yourself if you think collecting FlyBuys is worthwhile (unless you only want to get a BNE/SYD flight once a year). I've just killed my FlyBuys card after becoming a member in 1994 - at least I did get some movie passes...

Get yourself aligned with a good credit card(s)connected to a decent FF program. Learn that you can put just about everything onto your card(s) and only have one bill to pay every month.

If you are a good money manager, then you can regularly (whenever you get paid) transfer money to pay off your card(s). It works for me - the FF points tell the story.
:D :)

But why not double-up?

Pay for your goods & services at FlyBuy outlets with your Amex, and have them scan your flybuy's card as well.

FlyBuys can be very useful, particularly if you do all your grocery shopping at Coles, buy your grog at LickerLand, and buy your company's IT gear from Harris Technology :)

Double up

I do buy all my groceries from Coles and use my Amex (as I did tonight), but FlyBuys is a waste of time. I buy my red wine at The Grape using my Amex as well (as I have a friendly manager looking out for me with special allocations)

Give me my QFF points versus my measly allocation of FlyBuys that might get me a return trip once in a blue moon. I'd rather fly there on $, have a flexible ticket and make better use of my points by using them for upgrades. Nah, give me the movie passes for FlyBuys. :D

Fly Buy

But Lindsay, the flybuy card costs nothing, if you are going to Coles or any of the other partners why not use it in tandem with your credit card? You are only cutting off your points to spite your wallet. I find the biggest let down with flybuys is that they cancel points after a few years. They know how long it takes to build up points so it is a bit mean to cancel hard earned points. But the main point is that they are absolutely free. I can only think of Japan Airlines Mileage Bank, Singapore and Malaysia who are free, of the top of my head.

To the detractor. (not you Lindsay).
Mr Fells has cautioned the CBA for not making their fees obvious and he has put a bomb under the credit card mafia in Australia. I reckon he is a good bloke and needs the media to expose the dishonesty his department investigates. Have a look at the Australian Story program on him on the ABC, he's not a monster. He might even be benefiting you - unless you are a crook!

Spot-on, it costs you absolutely nothing. Even the weakest spenders should be able to rack up enough points for some movie tickets, etc on an annual basis.

"Mr" (not professor, as he likes to be called, that salutation should only be used on the campus that granted it to him, in an honorary capacity) Fells has done sod-all for anyone but his own press.

Raids on the oil companies after all the press releases/ conferences/ TV & radio spots about collusion, cartels, etc?

NOTHING.

Not a thing. Just a lot of hard-working Australians tarred with the brush of dishonesty, and not a SHRED of evidence to support the case against them. Fells and his publicity machine have gone awfully quiet about petrol prices - funny that.

Credit cards? Far more credit should go to the reserve bank than Fells for the coming changes, and those of you using credit (rather than charge) cards to acquire points might not welcome the proposed alterations - particularly at retail level.

Fells sticking it to QF for "predatory pricing" on the SYD-ADL route? Bottom line is Fells wants travellers to pay MORE.

He is a useless waste of taxpayer's money. Who does more for Australia - the likes of Gerry Harvey, or Alan Fells?

Your economic bible might well be "Das Kapital", mine is "Atlas Shrugged".

My bet is Fells has never read it.

re: Fly Buys

Shillard & Don, OK I relented - I didn't cut it up but I gave it to my girlfriend - she'll probably do a better job by shopping at those FlyBuys outlets and I promised that she'll get the free flights. Me, no, I'm not going to bust a boiler to shop at those Participating Companies and why use a NAB card when AMEX and Citibank give me more benefits. Maybe I should just get a CML Gift Voucher and buy my girlfriend something nice???

Shillard, agree with you about Alan Fels. If he has foreshadowed his retirement in 12 months, why not send him on gardening leave now? He postulates in front of the media (loves the spotlight), but when push comes to shove, I can't see any big wins he has actually had. give me the ex-Reserve Bank Govenor "Big Bernie" and his Industry Superannuation Funds of the Future....

I must have missed the story on Fells sticking it to QF for "predatory pricing" on the SYD-ADL route...maybe he had to buy a Business Class seat on a flight one day from his own pocket and saw what the rest of us have to pay regularly...

flybuys

Sorry, I was out of the bulletinboard for a while.
Yes, I have flybuys just because it is free. Also, I thought of getting NAB because I thought they were offering free points - did not know it will cost me annual fee to get free points.

I raked a lot of points by getting credit cards (without annual fee) and discontinuing after a year, if they ask me to pay fees. AMP AMEX - 10,000 points, Citibank 5000 points with another 20,000 for balance transfer and closing the old card, etc.

I have an altitude visa and Qantas ANZ visa and also AMEX AMP visa. If you haven't tried AMP Amex it is good. No annual fee if you charge $5000 a year, points for balance transfer, no rewards program fee unlike other AMEX cards, etc. Check it out. They change features and conditions quite frequently so look for the best offer.

Hysteria

Hi Shillard,
I see we don't see eye to eye on all things, but we are lucky to live in a democracy where we can at least express opinions.
Not to drag out the Fells subject, but I detected a little hysteria in your postings which I come across at various business meetings. Surely the calm, measured response is always more persuasive. Alan is not the devil incarnate unless companies are up to something. The fact that he is there at all with a conservative govt in power must say something for his staying power. Yes he uses the press, perhaps due to the absence of any other support from big business or Canberra. I just feel that his mere presence perhaps kerbs a few adventurous ideas out there.

Actually, we're not. There's no guarantee of freedom of speech in Australia, and you can be taken to court for stating simple anthropological facts (eg: recent example of a bloke being sued for stating "Aboriginies (at the time of white settlement) were the most primitive people on Earth".

Not particularly, when you're dealing with a savage enemy, you have to be even more savage. Fells has shown a willingness to throw accusations at people & corporations without ANY supporting evidence.

Simply speaking, that's cough. Where is the evidence against the oil companies? MONTHS after the raids (where Fells invited the TV crews along), we still haven't seen a single shred of evidence. Not one little bit.

Good companies like Caltex, Qantas, Hardly Normal etc have all copped it from Fells, when they have done NOTHING illegal or (worse) unethical.

There's little that's "conservative" about the current guv'mint, and Fells & Jackboot Johnny are pretty good mates. Fells gets plenty of support from Canberra, don't you worry about that. The biggest problem with people like Fells, is that they are not business people. Academics don't know squat about running a successful business. They're sort of like unionists, who want all the say and the rewards, but none of the risks or responsibility. If you think kerbing adventurous ideas is a GOOD thing, then maybe you should forward your resume to the ACCC. :)

Don' you worry about that.

I will try not to raise your blood pressure again, but, having worked a lifetime in the auto industry, I can tell you that business is as ruthless as indeed the unions or government agencies are. Everyone out there in the jungle is going for it. Business is not the cleanskin or the martyr here. As Joe said "Don't you worry about that".
This is the last word I promise. Have you ever wondered why the price of petrol does not go up every Thursday or Friday anymore? Perhaps someone sprung them? It's like the unions in the breweries going on strike just before Christmas every year when it's got Carlton over a barrel. If they can get away with it they will.
Who dosen't drive away railing against the police for revenue raising when they get pulled over for speeding?
Fells is a cop and you hate him, he is not there to be loved.
If you are in Brisbane some time I will buy you a drink, it could be a lively night!!
Regards

At the risk of actually sticking to the thread topic of Fly Buys ..... many overlook the fact you can at any time redeem points for gift vouchers.

IIRC they are for Coles group stores. Other retailers might offer them too.

$100 costs not that many Fly Buys points - 5K or 10K IIRC.

I regard that as free money basically.

Now and again Grace Brothers has insane promos where they offer 5000 Fly Buy points for spending $100 on menswear etc was one I recall getting last year. I bought a TV set and there was 5000 points bonus on that too.

Seeing that spend will get you effectively a bunch of cash BACK via a gift voucher it is a no brainer. For me anyway.
