Best way to use points (new to QFF, please be gentle...)

What month is that Duffa as I was looking in August for QF for two out of Melbourne and it was no good? As a result we booked with another brand.
We are using AA points to go LAX-ORD-LHR and it is AA and then BA across the water.

MEL-JFK is on QF metal this month using the now defunct Citi price match guarantee. Effectively 2 QF points per dollar.
Then AA to LHR in the new flat bed 777300ER

We decided today to go to Los Angeles and London and use those 2 places as our base.
We picked up pointy end on AA points at 62,500 miles each to get across to London (one way).
