Best way to earn 400 SCs and requalify

Hmmm, Flyertalk may be the best place to find out, otherwise at Lonely Planet chat room????

I don't think you'll enjoy the trek anywhere near how Marge will...but that'll earn lots of brownie points (as well as sore muscles, bruises, etc :o)

By way of a postscript to this thread, QF has comped me WP for next year. I will be singing their praises for a while. :)

With only one month to go before my membership anniversary and still 380 SCs short of re-qualifying as a WP (and with not much travel to do next month) I received one of those QF emails alerting me to the possibility of being dropped back to SG and asking me to go online and submit details of my travel plans for next year.

I completed the online form which, by my calculations and courtesy of a DONE5 that is booked but not ticketed for early next year, would have me achieve the required points to retain WP status next year. However today I received another email from QF acknowledging my travel plans but pointing out that I was not planning to do enough flights to retain WP and so I would be bumped back to SG.

I telephoned the frequent flyer service centre and the helpful guy had all the details in front of him. Together we went over the flights and he pointed out that there is an issue with the way the online form automatically adds up the SCs. He wasn't overly detailed - I suppose he rightly didn't want to be too negative about it - but the system was treating my planned domestic sectors for next year as being Discount Economy even though I always book in K class or above. So he spoke to a supervisor and presented the accurate SC figures and confirmed that they would comp me WP status!

How many years have you been WP? I'm curious if there's some kind of long-term loyalty required before they'll look at comping you.

Congratulations Homer!

Given these "hard economic times" it will be interesting to see if comping to retain status, whatever level it is, will become more flexible. I suspect in the past we have seen "flexibility" when it suited QF, such as when the sale of the QFF programme, and indeed QF itself, was being mooted.

I imagine they will want to keep their top fliers committed to QF, even if they are flying less, and comped status might help. The thought of empty lounges would not please QF. We shall see :-|

I was comped WP in my second year (2 years ago) without any need to provide details of planned travel.

I ended up with ~ 800 SC that year, after qualifying the previous year with ~ 1,700 SC.

My boss at the time was also comped WP for the second year, but not the following year.

So Homer's experience compared to mine would indicate that QF have more rencently been less relaxed in comping WP (which has been widely discussed on this forum).

I will struggle to get to 1,200 SC this year. Booking T and Y class fares to Asia is helping me get there, but the domestic travel (typically flexisaver fares) is pretty limited at the moment. So it will be interesting to see how generous QF will be towards me if I fail to requalify, although I think I will be pretty lucky if they comp me twice.

I would concur with your assessment Shano. I was comped SG a few years back without needing to submit travel plans. So it was a different process for me this time around. QF also stated in an email that this was a "once-only exception".

For various reasons my upcoming DONE4 next month has been cancelled and I will now be about 400 SCs short of requalifying as a WP by the anniversary on 30 Nov.

There's a chance QF may comp me, but I am doubtful as this is my first year as a WP so I have no WP track record. And while SG isn't bad at all, we have a big DONE5 planned early next year so the higher status will mean better lounge access and upgrade chances.

I am thinking of biting the bullet and taking Marge and Maggie on a two-week vacation using a DAS13. The cost of the flights will be around $15K plus taxes and then there is the accommodation, transfers, etc, etc.

I know that everyone's circumstances are different so it's hard to answer for me specifically, but is there an easier (read: "cheaper") way to get 400 SCs? Obviously I could just go by myself - that would be cheaper - but I know that will be hard to swing past the girls...

I am in exactly the same boat, 400 SCs to go for WP but I have four months. Try going backwards and forwards between SYD and CBR five times in J for $3,510? :) Easy going at 50 minutes per sector. Pretty boring though. :)

Homer, that's excellent news!! Happy days for your tripping for the next year, but make sure you re-qual WP using the BIS method ;), otherwise you'll join me in the ranks of SG.

Although in March 2010, I'll be back to Silver :o
