Travelling BN-LAX at end of October Business Q15 747-400. Are some seats better situated than others on upper deck? Saved to pay for these so don't want the worst seat at the highest price.

If you want to sit on the upper deck, then the only difference between seats is that row 11 is the bulk-head right at the front and row 16 is the emergence exit.

Unless you have Qantas Platinum FF status, you are unlikely to be able to pre-allocated row 16. It may become available at on-line check-in time, but don't hold your breath for it.

Row 11 is also the bassinet position, so is also generally held back from pre-allocation availability.

Otherwise just select an available seat of the aisle/window preference and enjoy the trip.

But do check out the seat map for the day you are flying as its possible (but unlikely) it could be operated by a 4-class aircraft with an F cabin sold as business class.

Speaking of best seats, 1A on a JQ 330-200 is is okay? I mean, does the bulkhead give you more or less legroom?

I picked it because I figure nobody can recline on me...

How long is the flight?

'tis ok for an hour or three, but foot room decreases on the left by about 10cm laterally as the fuselage narrows going forward.

I guess 2D, 1E and 1F are already gone?

8 hours-ish : CNS-NRT

Does the fuselage narrow that much? Looking at seat map it looks like the narrowing starts at/after the bulkhead. I'm not that concerned about the lateral space though - the length (for my beautiful legs) is my main concern...

It's like a small wedge taken out of your floor space. I'm 6' and when seated comfortably my toes just touch the bulkhead.

Up to you; I found it an issue MEL-BKK some time ago; caused minor discomfort - resolved by standing up and walking a bit.

You just can't rest your foot outside the line of your torso.

In any case I found it a PITA and will advise that it's there. Having travelled in 1A, 2D, 1E and 1F, as well as 1K I stand by my perception.

Leg room is fine in 1A (as it is in 1B, EF and JK - just JK suffer from galley noise).

After takeoff take your cabin bag down and place it in front of you to rest your feet on. That way you get a perfectly horizontal 'feet up' position and very comfortable. Works fine for me at 6'3. (assuming of course you have a cabin bag with wheels or similar that is suitable or this purpose)

The front seats are much better kthan anything behind because, as you say, people reclining in to you is not nice (huge loss of personal space).

I always travel with a pair of scholl 'flight socks'. Since I bought them I have never had sore or tired legs from sitting for long periods.

I guess I am fortunate in that generally I plan and book my travel well in advance and am able to select from the better seats.

FWIW, I'm happy to have 1A on short flights ...

YMMV.

Coolies! Thanks for the advice. I will see how 1A suits me as I managed to land it for all 3 segments.

Did, or does, alcohol help at all?

I know it is sad but I find with a little alcohol most seats on a plane are roughly the same. YMMV....

Given your physique, any row 1 seat or 2D would suit you. Of course that means flying on JQ!

At least you'd get a nice First Class lounge Lunch at MEL if off to BKK.

Let's say that choice will remain out of the equation as long as JQ is part of the QF group.

But considering the OP was asking about legroom on QF business class it is not a realistic comparison.

23ab on 330-200 lax-jfk

Has anyone got any experience on front row Y on the QF US flights A330-200(107/108). Am 6' and the flight is a good 5 hours.

cheers

This happened to me on a QF flight from Hong Kong to MEL. I was a little bit annoyed that my pre-selected Row 17 (upper deck) seat had changed to 2K and the check-in clerk at Arlanda airport couldn't explain it or reallocated row 17.

Its a good thing she couldn't as when I got on the plane and turned right (looking for row 2) I was redirected by a hostie to the left. The first 'upgrade' to speak of (although it was J travel) I've ever had, even as a Plat FF.

The "best seat game" is tough to play when travelling internationally. Seats and seat arrangements differ between planes and carriers, and a QF 747 and BA 747, for example, may be quite different. Different carriers choose different options in where to locate closets, lavatories, galleys, etc. This affects various locations' recline, legroom, and yes, lighting, smell, and noise. Beware, for example, of VS and DL business class herringbone arrangements where a few seats directly face the lavatory!

Two sites that are quite helpful in showing seatmaps and comments on + and - of seats for a lot of carriers and "metal" are the seatexpert and seatguru websites

Roughly on topic.

I am on QF016 soon in J. I have chosen/allocated an "A" seat with no seat seat showing as a "B" seat. When queried, QF said it was standard J.

Can any colleagues, "please explain"?

The seat map shows 1 + 2 + 1

Sounds like you are in a 4 class 747 and F cabin is being sold as J class, have fun.
