Yes QF188 was canned because PAX realise the plane was so inferior to QF29 or CX on the run. I know many businessmen in shoe industry who refused to go on QF188 when CX offer much better product. The price is generally the same so why would people go on old planes.

This is seat 46a. The one without a window. It looks good to me. Has the 58a have the same room?

Travelled MEL/HKG and back this week with wife, Daughter & Niece (14&13). Originally had QF29 and QF188 and had preallocated 35G and 35H/J/K for QF29 and 23/24-J/K for QF188 (333).

However, a month or so ago Qantas canned the QF188 thru to MEL so were rebooked on QF30. My preferred row 34 config was already preallocated so was able to get 58J/K & 59J/K; flew them on Monday.

Note you have to be SG/WP/CL to get pre-allocated 35H or exit row seats (on request).

IMO, 35H is the best seat on these 3 class 744s. There is only crew rest in front and you are near the pointy end. Better than any bulkhead row 34 seats.

I sat in 58K and would not reccommend it for a flight where you wished to sleep; OK for the QF30 Day flight. My 6' just fit. Mrs serfty in 58J was quite impressed with the exit row and space.
I am confused  . On the seat maps provided by QF, row 35 is just a normal Y row, with row 34 directly in front of it. The leg room looks the same as all normal, non exit row/bulkhead seats. This is in both the 50J and 64J configurations. To my eyes row 34 looks much better. Is it a different setup on the 56J configuration used on the MEL/HKG route?

Can anyone tell me what configuration is used for QF 93/94?

I am a little confused here. QF188 used to be operated by A330-300 aircraft each day. That means Skybeds in business class and AVOD throughout. And the QF A330s are newer than the QF744s and certainly no older than the CX aircraft operating the HKG-SYD route. Since the changes that affected serfty, QF188 no longer continues SYD-MEL, and is operated by A330-300 on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It is operated by 767-300 on the other three days.

As far as I am aware, it was only the SYD-MEL portion of QF188 that was removed from the schedules. And I expect that is more due to the removal of the need to position the A330 to MEL now that the A330 routes have changed than it has to do with businessman chosing to fly CX to MEL.

Have I missed something here? Is my memory of the QF188 operating as A330-300 HKG-SYD-MEL failed me?

The OP referred to the 56J/365Y version (2 Class 744). Look here: 56 Business; 356 Economy. Note the black triangles in 34H/J/K, they are crew rest seats and generally are not reclined. You actually get more floor leg room in row 35 than row 34. Also, row 34 have the tray tables in the armrests so for row 34, 1) there is less lateral room & 2) You cannot lift up the arm rests. There is a dark blue curtain between 34H/J/K & 35H/J/K

Generally 3 Class.

No, you memory is not failing you; it is as you desrcibed. FWIW, I took QF188 from SYD to MEL at least 10 times in the last 18 months.

QF188 was not canned pe se. As I posted "... canned the QF188 thru to MEL ..." they stopped it running HKG-SYD-MEL and scheduled HKG-SYD instead.

But to me it really looks like enough room on the pic. I´m 1,93m and i really really wanna have a window without being restricted in getting up whenever I want. ...
I am only relating my experiences of a flight I took in 58K last Monday. Being 183cm at times I had to either 1) Jam my toes up in a groove under the Life Raft pod (inadequate) or 2) Extend my legs out to the left to stretch them (imposing on seated neighbours space). Another 10cm would make 1) not useful.

Note that row 46 is over the back 3rd of the wing and downward views of terra firma are ordinary.

I had seat 46C to LAX recently, with both 46A and B filled.

The guy in 46A would have been at least 6' tall and looked far from comfortable throughout the flight, with the same problem as just posted by Serfty.

Have a look what i just found! The guy pictured was about 6 ft tall and was quite comfortable sitting 58a.

If I look, I am sure that I can find someone with positive reviews of Egyptair's onboard service

Its up to you; the space at the window seats at the exit are quite impeded by the slide raft. Given it is a late night departure and sunrise occurs at about 3:30 in relation to point of origin, you are going to be an unpopular person if you have the blinds raised anyway.

If you are tall and want decent legroom, then go for the C or H seat ( or B / J in the middle even ) . I like window exit seats , but on a QF 744 I always go for the aisle since at 6'2" I do not find sitting in the A/K exit seat v comfortable

Yeah, but the guy on the right appears to have that pillow over his knee which, in turn, is higher than the arm rest. I would bet his left foot is pushed up against the Life Raft Pod thereby forcing his knee up.

I did that myself several times the other day. The point I made in an earler post still holds; that this seat is fine for a Daytime flight where you do not intend to recline and sleep, but not comfortable for reclining. I have seen people in these seats with both legs resting on top of the pod. Since this is about 30 cm higher than the seat it looked most uncomfortable.

Ok so canned is an expression, but is it not true that QF 188 no longer lands in Mel, therefore it has stopped, finished, no longer lands in Mel, therefore the CHOICE for melbourne travellers is 1, one QF flight or lonf transit in SYD or 2 CX flights.
Ah freedom of choice, thanks CX

It was almost like this before it was 'canned'. This winter, it was only doing the additional SYD-MEL segment on Mondays; i.e. only one domestic Segment per week.

Last question: Is the 58a nicer than a normal window seat???

I would say no since the slide raft is very restrictive . 58BC are nice seats, but not A

Purely in respect to viewing ... no.

58a being in an exit row there is less forward viewing available; this is due to the Emergency Exit Door taking up much space allowing room for only one window where else on the aircraft there would be two.

For viewing it's better than 46A/K since those seats' downward views are obliterated by the wings.

However, You do have a window immediate to your left which does afford reasonable views; you can see the wings extend for takoff and landing for example.

Of course, as in most flights, there is often little to see when at altitiude, especially at night.

Enjoy your flight.
