I'm not a FF and this is my first posting so pls don't be too hard on me... I need to fly PER-SFO economy class early August and have two basic questions:-

1) Best route? Seems the only options are PER-SYD-SFO on QF (total 21hrs) or PER-SIN-HKG-SFO on SQ (26hrs). QF looks more logical but given all the stories about QF economy I figure the extra 5hrs travel time on SQ may be less painfull overall. I occasionally visit ICN and KIX by SQ and it's bearable, even with the overnight leg ex-SIN. Any suggestions?

2) Any tips on jetlag? I don't travel so well and basically have to start work asap after arrival.

Thanks,

Well i can't comment on the routes but to me QF and SQ economy are just the same, especially since you want to be sleeping a lot of the time if jetlag is your problem.

When does either flight arrive ? morning or evening ?
I like to stay up late before i leave so i am tired on the plane, then if i arrive evening thats great, i can sleep, get up and goto gym in hotel in the morning, have a few good coffees with breakfast and then off to work.

Re: Best Route PER-SFO --> LONE4 ??

Longer flights can be better as you get more sleep. On flights you are woken up 1 to 2 hours before land and for meals. No good if you want to sleep

A quick look on QF PER-SFO return prices out at $3000 to $3500 including taxes & surcharges.

For $3479 plus taxes & surcharges you can do a 20 segment round the world LONE4 ticket.
You would get 4 flights in Oz on this (up to 12 months) - Do you need to go to east side or up to DRW any time up mid Aug 2008 ?

Oneworld fares link on the Oneworld web site
Bookings - Flights - Round the World - oneworld Explorer - Fare from Australia link on the QF web site

A circle pacific is another option. Link is oneworld - Circle Pacific

(on this site best often means more ff miles ;) )

In relation to jetlag - do you have the option to leave earlier? If travel makes you squirly then taking N extra day might be good.

On my current DONE4 (yes I am in business class) the extra time flying is intentional - I will get to the UK exhausted and will sleep sunday night so the extra segmentd I will be flying will help with lag :)

Or is this just a way of justifying all the unnecessary sectors on your current employer funded DONE4. ;)

Thanks everyone for your comments. Good idea on the RTW ticket; will have a look at it.

I've never flown SQ, but I've flown in Y on QF and a bunch of other airlines, and QF stacks up ok IMO. I guess the potential for a rotten flight exists all the time if you encounter bad equipment or a grumpy crew but I've never had what I would call a bad flight on QF. Perhaps some minor irritations (also on other airlines), but nothing serious.

Oh, and welcome to AFF, doubleview :)

PS. Mwenenzi's DONE4 or circle Pacific suggestions are very worthwhile considering if you have the time and/or inclination.

I have no idea what you are talking about :)

The hard one to justify is LHR-DXB-LHR - but the APD is about the same as a dinner in london isnt it?

Without doing the xONEx, the inclusive cost of the necessary direct fare would have been far higher than what (I guess)has actually been paid - so in that respect simongr is saving employer funds.
Nett Result:
simongr - happy
employer - happy for less cos

Cheers ...

I know what will be high on my list of points to check out in my next job, is travel in Y or J or F but thats not likley.
Not sure i want a job with travel though. I like it but i can live without it.

Two options not mentioned so far are
1- CX PER-HKG-SFO
2- QF to SIN and AA SIN-(JL code share)-NRT-LAX-SFO

I haven't priced CX recently.

Even with the overnights in SIN (if you are frugal - note: there are some nice clean hotels in Little India - just smallish rooms) the AA fares can be quite reasonable.

If you are willing/able to travel PER-SIN every 11-12 months I would seriously consider basing my travel from there. QF 12 month tickets SIN-PER-SIN are way cheaper than PER-SIN-PER.

In the case of RTW fares - BA and QF have a BA premium economy fare that is a bit more than $4000 but would permit BA WT+ seats SIN-LHR-SFO and a return from SFO on QF.

Happy wandering.

I was thinking when I saw the SQ option, that it may be better to take CX (or QF) to HKG then jump on the SQ flight. I think it actually connects better.
